G&L Tribute Series

Alright, I'm getting some minor GAS and I'm wondering about these G&L Tribute Series Tele...

I'm digging this:
http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/TributeSeries/guitars/ASAT_Classic/index.asp

and this:
http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/TributeSeries/guitars/ASAT_Special/index.asp

So...What do you guys think of these? Sound, feel, build quality???
Between the 2 different pickups in each guitar, what should I expect?

I have never played any G&L guitar so I'm looking for some discussion about them...Especially these particular models. What other guitars of the same price range and style would they compare to?

Thanks guys,
Jason

Re: G&L Tribute Series

Cant give you much specifics, but the tributes are very nice players for a reasonable amount of $.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

They should have the same pickups that G&L put in their US models in them too. Excellent value.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

they have the same pups and hardware as the us ones

but not the same wood

i've played and considered buying a lot of the us g&ls in the past. there's a shop around here which carries many nice ones

the tributues......eh.....not so special. not that there's anything wrong with em

and i will admit to an import bias - ask anybody around here - I'm a bit of a US snob

but the tribute guitars were pretty run-of-the-mill budget import. not bad not great

the US g&ls can be pretty special tho

Re: G&L Tribute Series

I like the pickups on my Tribute Special. It makes for a good backup, or alternative to my US Tele.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

I haven't played the imports, but I played a G&L Tele with a Seth in the neck that was pure butter. If the import is even half as good, it would be a good gigging guitar for most people.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

G&L's are great the Tribute ones are better than Fenders in the same price range and the US made ones are as good as the Custom Shop Fenders.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

Like I somewhat haphazardly posted yesterday, there's nothing wrong with the Tribute guitars, but they are what they are: Well-appointed guitars made at about the peak level of East Asian mass production. I'd consider them on par with the PRS SE guitars. Certainly gig-worthy.

The USA G&Ls are better enough to more-than-justify the increase in price, however.

What he said.

I've had a few Tele style tributes and a couple of real US models come through the shop in the last couple of years. The difference in feel is like the difference between a standard Fender MIM and a standard US Fender. I will say the import G&L stuff is a little better than the Fender MIM stuff I've ran through, but still doesn't feel as good as U.S. built stuff. It's mostly the feel of the neck. The imports almost feel like a raw wood feel on the neck while the couple of US models were slick as ice.

Re: G&L Tribute Series

Thanks for the replies fellas... I was just looking around the website yesterday and when I saw the prices, I got curious. I have heard great things about G&L guitars, but never had one my hands.

Now THIS is killing me...

Re: G&L Tribute Series

I own a G&L George Fullerton Signature "Strat" and love it.. I have never played their imports, but have been impressed by every US made G&L I've tried.. and most G&L owners swear by their famous necks.. they just feel "right"..

I'm no import snob by any means.. if cash is an issue then check out some MIM Teles.. I have a MIM Tele that I think is fantastic.. I replaced the pups with SD's of course! I think it's every bit as good (tone & feel) as my custom Tele that has Fralins.. and I ain't afraid to gig with it because they use that polyurethane finish which is pretty damned durable.. I have alot of Teles, and love 'em all because they're pretty simple creatures to modify to your liking..

Re: G&L Tribute Series

I have quite a few G&Ls, I've never played a Tribute model as they only make a couple in lefty.

This is my latest, an ASAT Special Deluxe in natural with an ash body and maple top and those big honkin' MFDs .

The saddle lock bridge also gives the Special great sustain, even on a clean tone at low volumes you can feel the difference.
