One of the most important guitars in the history of rock and blues music will be released this December: Eric Clapton’s 1960 “Beano” Les Paul. The axe that Slowhand wielded on the classic John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton — when Londoners were declaring him “God” — will soon be available in stores, courtesy of the Gibson Custom Shop.
Check back in the coming weeks for more details!

Re: G-word to Release Clapton "Beano" Les Paul

I just finished reading that about 5 minutes ago. I have Gibson on my Facebook and they had a link to it. I guess that'll be another $8000-$12,000 guitar.

Re: G-word to Release Clapton "Beano" Les Paul

What a joke...

The guitars been gone for years now and nobody, not even Eric knows for sure even what year it was!

What the hell are they going to base it off of...I mean the only think they can do it get the colour close, the funky pickups and past that it's a roll of the dice!

I'm a big fan of Gibson in general and Eric and that tone is deserving of a tribute but i'm serious they have nohting to go off of...

Not to mention that I'm starting to wonder how many more stupidly priced LP's they can come up with!

Plus I'd rather see em do a 335 or one of those wicked psychedelic SG's like this 'un

Wouldn't you just be better off getting a LP Custom Shop R0? Then again, what do I know?

answer; not much.

Re: G-word to Release Clapton "Beano" Les Paul

I can see this being like the RR re-issue......which is essentially a cream LP custom when all's said and done.

It will be an extremely expensive version of the 1960 reissue with nothing to distinguish it from any other Gibson currently in production.

Somehow Fender seem to do a consistently better job of artist reproductions than Gibson.

Re: G-word to Release Clapton "Beano" Les Paul

One of the Les Pauls used on the Beano album is owned by Mickey Moody. Both John Mayall and Eric have said that it is one of the Les Pauls that was around then. Although neither know if it was used on any of the recordings (it has a provenance as well so it a guitar that was owned by Mayall and used by Eric) Another of the "Five or Six" to quote Mayall was later owned by Danny Kerwin but 'lost' sometime in the sixties.

That was the first thing I thought about. Can't make much of a reproduction if you don't have the original.

Unless... Gibson used the money they have earned by selling overpriced Les Pauls to go back to the past and steal Clapton's Les Paul so they could make a reproduction.

It looks like they are modelling it on this guitar which is one that he was photographed with most at the time. The point is that Eric didn't have an epiphany and buy a Les Paul, he got one because Mayall had three already and he liked the sound John got. According to Mayall there were five Les Pauls and a couple of 335s in the studio and no one remembers who used what for which track. One of the guitars was probably the one Mickey Moody has as Mickey got it from a guy who got it from Mayall and told him that it was the one used on Bluesbreaker however Mayall recognised the guitar but didn't know which Eric had used for that.

And it will be bought by 5 blues Lawyers and hung on a wall. Whatever. 10 guys here can tell you 20 different ways to get that tone with a couple of stomp boxes and some eq. Les Paul optional.

The whole "icon" thing becomes to fail s a business model when the market can't afford the product.

There is a major difference between the two. With the RR, Gibson had easy accessibility to the actual LP Randy played since Delores has it. They were able to make the RI just like the original. With this Beano LP, Gibson is most likely flying blind based on what is known and said here about that LP.

All the shots of Mayall era Clapton show him with this guitar. Some with covers, some without, but it's the same guitar. I don't think Mayall's memory is accurate here.

I mean, it's a guitar that sold for $300 new, and it's gonna be reissued at who knows how many thousands. If it had been tucked under a bed, and not played on a huge record, no one would give it another thought.

Can't wait for the Les Paul Forum guys to get hold of this and start creaming their shorts:14:

Re: G-word to Release Clapton "Beano" Les Paul

I wonder if it;ll have an 'I'm with Enoch' sticker on the case like his old one?

+1000. Actually I don't think many blues lawyers will by buying them up either, when in every industry, including law firms, people are now saving their money, rather than spending, for the fear that their job may not be there tomorrow.
