Gain makes pickup output not matter as much?

I have actually noticed that when I switch between switching between my pickups with gain up output isn't as much noticeable. When I tried with gain low enough to call clean the differences in volume much more noticeable. With gain up I guess all the pickup positions had about same volume just a different tone.

That's because with the gain up the pre-amp has reached it's saturation point leaving no headroom available for an increase in volume at that stage.

It's the tubes natural compression. When you reach that point everything has the same output. The input only determines the amount of ditortion...

This is why I actually prefer low and medium output pickups for gainy applications, if your pickups are too hot they can push your preamp too hard and create a nasty buzzsaw-like overcompressed mush, if you're not careful.

I think once you get better you want less gain, your playing gets more clean and you prefer less mud to cover up the crap.

Or maybe its when you get older and you grow up, you prefer less gain and less of that crap sound.

I prefer the gain of my amp, not what the pickup puts out. I understand why the 59 is such a popular pickup.

I prefer the sound of high output pups with the gain turned down to the sound of low output pups with the gain turned up.
