gain on 12

Re: gain on 12

oh man, no man, you're one of these guys? telling me I'm hallucinating?

no man, please, don't do this. Am I that despised and ridiculed?

omg, what the fuk am i doing here. All I'm trying to do is talk about gear.

:eyecrazy:

WTF is this?

You had a cool mind set going, and were standing by your opinion of your new gear...don't back pedal now, dude.

Man up and stand for your point of view.

FWIW, I think the C-30s are kick ass. Kind of like a Tele in that there's only what you need. Maybe not extreme metal, but you could do metal on one.

I'm hoping you didn't buy the combo version-wouldn't want all those jingle bells & rattles :)

I like the classic 30, and DB series, nice gain tones for El84s w/out sounding all Vox.

Re: gain on 12

Okay, I'm still stuck on how the hell anyone can get tight, ferocious m3tal out of an EL-84. Maybe if you keep it turned down, and add a dirt box. But crank that sucker up and EL-84s turn into sponges, at least in my experience.

Go play a MESA F-30 and get back to me :)

Re: gain on 12

This place has gotten very clicky and/or cork sniffer lately. Unless you post about booteek or something universally hated, you usually get flamed or ignored.

I don't think it's a clique/snobbery thing

If some kid who works 12 hours a week at his uncle's landscaping company posts about getting... I dunno, a peavey valveking, I don't see people ridicule him and tell him to go buy a bogner

BUT... oh what the hell was his name who used to get another POS squire or less Strat like once a week, paint it some ugly color, and throw a different humbucker in the bridge... Anyways, stuff like that can get kind of annoying--the person could obviously afford better **** but for some reason they keep buying all this entry-level gear and telling everyone how amazing it is, when all of us know that it is, in fact, entry level stuff.

I mean I don't care, you can spend your money on whatever you want, I'm just saying people are gonna be more interested in NGD's or NAD's that involve stuff that's not in every pawn shop and music store in the country, especially when it's been established that you have the means for it.

Thats what it really boils down to for me. New booteek gear & vintage gear is exciting to me. But so is a Marshall class5.

I have particular tastes and rarely do I get excited about someones new Blues Junior, Line 6, Agile, or MIM strat or such (then again, I may for unusual examples or odd colors, or what have you).

And FWIW- I don't post "New X day" threads because I'm fishing for comments. I'm just excited. It's like taking a spin in your new car around the neighborhood  I'm not looking for some guy walking down the street to give me the :bigthumb: and shout "*****in ride dude!"

Re: gain on 12

every month you get a different ho-hum amp and talk about it like the sky parted open and the Sexwolf Goddess of Heavy Rocks sent it to you directly to spread the gospel of tone to the world

then a month later you get something different and say the exact same things about it

i'm not mad at you, i'm just noticing a pattern. you should write for a guitar magazine.

Re: gain on 12

Are you quite alright?? You're twice my age and you're posts make you seem half...

Re: gain on 12

Well this escalated quickly. Why are we acting like a bunch of girls? Say what you want to say and don't take what's said to you personally. Just take it. Dear, God.

Re: gain on 12

Man, I gots ta say I'm gratefull to ya PV.
I actually never knew my Carlsbro Fat Boy 4xel84 amp could lay down teh BroOtz, but it kind of can, apparently. I knew it could do chimey Vox style clean real well, but at 30 watts, this beasty boy can crank out some full bore grind- check out the clip. For me, 30 watts is JUST starting to get loud enough for me when playing with distortion.

Re: gain on 12

Hello Peavey Classic 30 owners, and lovers of this great sounding little monster,

You might try an old stock 12aT7 for the first tube in your "Normal" channel if you haven't already. I know, I know, it's not ordinarily a good "tone-shaper" tube. It usually isn't the best choice for the V1 tube because even though it is a "lower gain" tube, it conducts 5 times more than a 12aX7 and so it juices subsequent gain stages too much. However, in this circuit it performs wonderfully well. Even better? With the T7 installed in the V1, try dropping the "Mids" all the way OFF and listen to what happens when you turn up the volume a little. The bold zing, swing, and clean sustain are all pretty amazing, aren't they?

Don't worry about what that T7 will do for your "Crunch" channel. V1 is not the first tube the distortion channel hits. V2 is. Otherwise, the 12aT7 would make the crunch channel sound terrible. Instead, a glance at the "Pre" and "Post" dials on the other channel will remind you that this is a James Brown-designed amp, and yes it is capable of offering the same amount of harmonic distortion from its preamp that a block-letter 5150 is capable of, but it uses less gain stages (tubes) to do it. It nevertheless is a very high amount of gain, and it's the punchiest of all the Peavey Classics. So do yourself a favor and get a "High Grade +" 12aX7 from Ruby for the V2. I did that, and I use a Philips 12aT7 in the V1. Those two are great for each other in that order in this amp. I smooth out all my breakup with a GE 5751 for the phase splitter. I want to wreck into the power amp with the nicest crunch I possibly can. The T7 did not sound good here. A Sovtek LPS took 2nd place. But that 5751 is the clear winner in the PI slot on this amp no matter what the other tubes are. I turn up to 7 or 8 on the "Post", and yes, the "Pre" on 12 sounds superb. It sounds as good as anything else does, and yes, four EL84s can chug and djunn just like anything else can. I plug straight in and play stuff like Creeping Death, MegaDave, Powerslave, Gojira, and the harmonically distorted stylings of Edward Van Halen.

If you want to play a 5150 in the sweet spot at 2 pm on the Post, it is just too loud for any purpose other than living in an isolation cab or a stadium. A Classic 30 head into the right speaker cabinet can be the perfect solution. The sound person at the venue will actually let you turn up to the sweet spot, and get that same exact sound. Do any of you doubters think a 5150 can't be used to make heavy metal music?

This is a 5150 in a 30-watt package.

Re: gain on 12

Say goodbye to that Ibanez, BTW...think they'll send back a collectors item? Nah.
