What are you wanting to get tonally - boosted pre-amp or distorted gain from pedal?

And, are we talking an AC30 with the power amp wide open or with a master volume dialled back?

For my AC30, I use a Wampler Tumnus, that seems to get me the right amount of overdrive for what I play (classic rock / blues). I have an OCD, never tried it in front of an AC30, there's a new action item for the weekend.....

Dialled back Master , so guess its a boost , and some extra distortion at lowe volumes .

Keeley Java Boost or similar perhaps? They tend to be pretty cool with an AC-30.

OK. I had an AC30CC2X for a while, so used it with Master Volume (though I did remove the treble bleed cap, so that it didn’t get brighter as it got quieter). I eventually sold it because it was just too LOUD to use anywhere I played out.

I liked the OCD into the AC30 - it will give you a wide range of gain/volume combination. The only thing to watch for is if it becomes too bass heavy.

For a less gain-y boost, I really liked my BYOC Silver Pony (Klon Silver Klone) into the AC30 - the mid-boost of that circuit complements the scoop of the AC30s EQ. I don’t really like the Klon circuit in its hi-gain range, but for cleanish boost, it does beautiful things to the AC30 pre-amp.

Well, for vintage sounds (Blackmore, etc), a Treble Booster would work. Nowadays I would use an 805 Overdrive due to the 3 band active EQ.

Re: Gain pedal for AC30 please

It depends on the amp settings. If you use the top boost channel set to a clean bright sound through the blue alnico speakers (like U2...), it's not easy to get good distorted sounds, as most pedals will sound very bright and harsh. A higher gain distortion pedal should have tone and presence controls and an overdrive could profit from a mid control. I use clones of the Crunchbox, the Dirty Little Secret mk3 and a TS-9 switchable to ST-9 (“Ibanez Super Tube Screamer“), but will build the Friedman Dirty Shirley and VFE Pale Horse soon, to have another option. This is my Twin-Drive:
