Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

Which amp has more gain? Anybody played Metallica or Megadeth on a VM?

I already have a JCM800, and I'm wondering if I would get a used VM or a bnew Ironheart.

Which JCM 800, 2203/04 or 2205/10? The 2210 may have more gain but the 2203 won't. The Vintage Modern has two gain modes: one is about the same as a plexi or a JMP master volume and the other cuts in an extra 12AX7 preamp tube. The extra 12AX7 mode should have more gain than any stock JCM 800. Whether its enough by itself for Metallica is another question.

I don't know that an extra preamp tube or more gain is relevant when determining whether an amp can do old thrash classics. If you got for the VM, get a used EQ pedal as well.

I gigged a VM for about a year and a half. With high output pickups, and on the high gain mode, you can do old school metal at a pinch... But IMO it's not particularly suited to Metallica/Slayer from a voicing point of view so if that's what you're looking for it might be better to stick with the 800 boosted. The VM is more of a hotrodded 60s sort of sound.

Which JCM 800, 2203/04 or 2205/10?

I have a 4104, which is the combo version of the 2204. It's loaded with g12-65s.

Whether its enough by itself for Metallica is another question.

Not really looking for a scooped Metallica sound, and not too crazy about the ridiculous amounts of lows on Slayer. I like a middy, Megadeth countdown to extinction tone.

My main guitar for metal is a Les Paul with Duncan Custom/APH1. My alternate guitar is a Les Paul with a L-500XL/PGn. I guess those have high enough output?

Also, how bright is the VM? As bright as the JCM800?

Or look around for a TSL or DSL. They have the gain and can be had for $500-$600.

Bro save some $$ and find an old JCM 900 Dual master or a SLX!!
Both have the gain/tones you are looking for and will bury the VM's for half the $$!!

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

I had a 2210... loud as **** but the TONE was there.

I'm not interested in the VM series... I don't like when companies do this thing where they take their "classic" sort of designs and start adding all sorts of contemporary "conveniences". It really ain't broke... don't fix it!

My amplifier has no FX loop, no channel switching... I'm happy as a clam.

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

With the help of the little humble yellow box from Boss, you can get this kind of gain.

Is that enough for you ?

I like it !

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

I use an MXR ZW OD in front of my JCM800 to get into metal territory. I have been itching for an amp where I will no longer need an OD pedal to get that much amount of gain.

I guess most of you, if not all, agree that the Vintage Modern does not have that much gain compared to the JCM800.

I just tried the Laney Ironheart 120w Head today through an Orange 212 and I was not impressed. Too modern sounding. It doesn't have the mids I really dig on my JCM800... I've toyed around all 3 channels as well as the master controls, and I still was not satisfied. The highs get buzzy really quick (more buzzy than my JCM900). There was something missing. I just can't get the tone that I can hear in my head from that amp. And I don't think changing the stock 6L6 to EL34s would get me where I want to be.

Oh well...

I guess I need to just keep hunting.

Maybe a JSX?

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

I haven't found the tone of a VM anything less than wonderful. The gain is great, but may not be enough for you. It's plenty for anything I do. The VM is "Vintage" voiced with "Modern" gain.

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

Found this . . . the 'RoadKing of Marshalls', the JVM410 vs. the humble Vintage Modern.

Re: Gain - Vintage Modern vs JCM800

keep an eye out for a dual master volume model (not dual reverb model) jcm 900 as well.
