Gary Moore's Red Strat pick up question.

Re: Gary Moore's Red Strat pick up question.

Just did a bit of reading, and it looks like there was an Antiquity in the middle, but not until the mid 2000's. Prior to that, the "neck and middle had been replaced." The middle pickup failed twice, was rewound the first time, replaced with the Ant the second, but according to the article, Gary wasn't playing the Strat much after that.

It would see the bridge was probably stock, and the neck was who the hell knows what.

Re: Gary Moore's Red Strat pick up question.

I'm not super familiar with Gary's Strat era. Does he ride the middle pickup a lot? Now that I think about it, most of what I know of him is from a later-era live album, which is all Les Paul. Should probably go back and listen to more of his earlier stuff.

Caring about the middle pickup is interesting. Most people seem to lower them and really ignore the 3 position. I always thought it was a cool tone that doesn't get enough love. A few months ago, Chris Duarte did a clinic nearby, and the middle was his home base. He would occasionally go to the neck or bridge, but really lived in the middle. It sounded great, and not exactly like every other bluesy Strat guy.

I'm also really only familiar with Gary's Les Paul era playing and I can't really remember him *ever* using the neck pickup, he's all about that searing bridge lead tone.

And doesn't Clapton use mostly his middle pickup?

I was gonna mention Clapton. He uses it especially when he adds a bit of gain from his mid-boost for a more 'humbuckery' tone.
