Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

I've really been into Les Pauls lately. I've always enjoyed them, but even moreso now, and am really gassing for a new Les Paul Custom. I'll probably leave my R9 in standard tuning and keep the Custom in Eb. I'm considering both the Custom and the '68 Reissue - both made in the Custom Shop, but the '68 has the long neck tenon.

1. How are the neck profiles for each of these Pauls? I've grown accustomed to the '59 profile of my R9 and like it very much. I want to know how they would compare.

2. Is the long neck tenon worth it? My R9 has incredible tone and sustain, but I don't know how much of it is due to the long neck tenon.

3. Is there anything else I should consider when comparing these 2 Les Pauls? I really don't care about the pickup differences because Duncans will be going in there anyway.

Thanks!

Mike

Oh, I also heard something about the Customs now having a weight-relieved back? Any information/opinions on that would be great as well.

As far as I know the 68's do have the weight relief bodies, the '57 Customs do not. As for the neck it's similar to the '59 profile but is probably just a little fatter, think of an SG Standard neck as they both have the same rounded profile. The neck certainly isn't as big as the early 50's neck, it's a good all around profile in my opinion.

What color are you looking at? I got to see a Firemist in person a month or so ago, cool color but I think it might be somewhat limited edition.

I ended up with a Faded Cherry '57 RI Custom. I couldn't be happier, I love the solid Mahogany guitar. Good luck with your hunt if you do decide to get one!

Thanks for the info. I actually heard that the regular Customs have the weight-relieved bodies. I have only seen the '68 in a triburst finish so far - looked pretty cool. I kind of wish it had pure white binding though. I think I'm going to go for one with a maple top. Nice Pauls, btw! Look awesome!

Re: Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

If you are going to drop the cash, Id say look for a nice 57 Reissue Black Beauty. I never really cared for the Les Paul Custom (the one that comes in white, sunburst, wine red and black), but the historic customs are to die for. THey just feel more solid in your hands, and they just sound richer and mellower than the normal customs with the maple tops. Just my opinion, you already know the advantages of having a historic gibson - just definitely make sure youy check out the historic customs also in your search :-)

I haven't really considered that one - thanks. My only concern would be the early 50s profile... maybe too beefy for me?

Woah - $3999 for a '57 Black Beauty... not gonna happen. Looks like I'm sticking to the regular customs or a '68. I think Customs are going for $3300 and I saw a triburst '68 for $3500. Still high if you ask me. May go the ebay route unless I could get a good deal.

buy used

but that gold chrome always looks so tacky, thats the problem

O sh!t, wow, 4 grand. Its that VOS bullsh!t that gives them an excuse to jack up the price. I havent been keeping up with the historic gibson since late 05 when I got mine, so the prices have rose since then. Forgot about that. Last time I remember checking out prices for 57 Customs they were about 3500 and the 68 was about 3300 and the normal custom was 3000...

Re: Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

Yeah, the prices are out of control. I remember seeing the same '68 Custom at Guitar Center about 2 years ago for $500 less. Unless I can get them to knock the price down when I do intend to buy, I'm going used. Thats how I afforded my R9.

Re: Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

put one together with warmoth parts. save thousands. it wont be a set neck, though. but thats cool with me.

Re: Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

When it comes to a lpc only the real deal is good enough,IMO :)
I`v been gasing for a regular white lpc for a while now but other guitars keep coming in it`s way !

Re: Gassing for a Les Paul Custom...

I`m a huge warmoth fan but there`s something special about
a gibson lp custom :D no doubt about it ....

I had an Ace Frehley Custom for a while and loved that guitar. Can't wait to have a Custom at home again :). Just something about them I love.

Yeah...go get the queen!!!
I remember some years ago when i had a studio as my main guitar and
was in need of a backup axe. A friend of mine brought me a late 80`s custom
that he said i could borrow for a couple of months....hmmm I still this day
have`nt been that blown away by a guitar,it made my studio sound like a fart ! They even had the same pickups mounted
