Gear help

I am looking to completely replace all my current gear with a budget of £1000 ($1320). The tone I hope to achieve will be somewhat similar to the guitars on Neurosis' Times of Grace, yet still be able to achieve Baroness Blue Record, and even Panzerballet. I am quite fond of the idea of owning a Gibson, so if any suggestions lead to that, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not quite sure where to post this, so I thought here was as good a place as any.

Re: Gear help

welcome to the forum!

if you'd like to get a gibson, get a gibson and build the rest of the rig around that

Re: Gear help

If you're gonna get a Gibson, you'll probably need a bigger budget, especially if you're not in the US. That might just about cover the guitar, depending, obviously. I'm just saying that you're not going to have a lot left over for much else.

Re: Gear help

Seconded, whatever Gibson you want won't fit into any budget where you're buying a decent amp, or else you wind up with a limited selection. I'd fear a Gibson so cheap it would fit into that budget.

I've never heard of any of the bands you mention, but if you can't play it through a Jackson SLX Soloist and Orange __15 w/ a decent 2x12 I'd consider that a shame; you'd have a bit of cash for pedals after spending ~a grand on those, used. In the US, anyway.

Re: Gear help

I was looking at a SG studio faded. I've heard mostly great things about it and when I played it in shop it played wonderfully. I'm just thinking a bare bones rig, Guitar -> Amp, but if you have any suggestions for cheap and cheerful fuzz pedals, then that'd be great. Many thanks

Re: Gear help

If you go used you can probable get CLOSE with that budget. Used, faded series, etc.

does the rig need to be big enough for gigs? Thats going to make a big difference in budget for the amp.

Re: Gear help

If you assemble a band to play in the basement, at sometime, someone is gonna want to do a show. Go in with that in mind. You might have to compromise on the Gibson (like an Epi with good pickups) so you can get a good amp.

Re: Gear help

Epiphone SG 400 $300
Find a set of Seymour Duncan pups to fit your tone ~$300
Fender Bassbreaker 15 $600
You have $120 left for a pedal

Re: Gear help

Don't know if you have the equivalent of a Craigslist over there, but I'm always seeing Epi and LTD eclipse models well under $500 that already have great aftermarket pickup upgrades.

Re: Gear help

Go with a basic Epiphone. Makes room for a good amp and pickups.

Re: Gear help

Or even a prs SE. Great built and can be had for 300 or so used US dollars. Bugera make great Amp and are absolutely affordable. You could pick up a used Bugera 333 and cover massive ground. Then have a couple hundred left over for pedals and what not. If you ever decide to play out that setup is plenty enough.

Re: Gear help

Thanks everyone. I won't be playing venues any time soon (exams etc) so I won't need anything over a 15 watt tube amp for now. As for pedals, I'd rather have distortion created by the amp and high output pickups than by pedal, as previous experience with distortion pedals has left me feeling underwhelmed to say the least. We have Craigslist (I think) as well as reverb and eBay, so I'll keep my eyes out for a good deal on a faded Gibson or high range epi/ltd.

Re: Gear help

I have an 18 watt tube amp that is seriously loud before it starts to distort- I still use an OD pedal with it to get overdrive at a lower volume.
