Genz Benz El Diablo

Hey guys...

This amp seems pretty interesting to me. Who here has tried one out or owns one? Comments or opinions? What catches me the most are the clean clips/videos I have come across and how great they sound. Very bluesy. How does everyone like the high gain tones of this amp?

Re: Genz Benz El Diablo

i've listened to some sound clips on their website.....the high gain sounds pretty brutal, if i find a sweet deal on ebay i might pick one up.....

Re: Genz Benz El Diablo

I JUST read an article about the GB Black Pearl, and although i think it is wayyy over-priced for a 30watter, the Brit mag, GUITARIST (OCT '06, pg. 138) sounded very optemistic about this model.

I like the 5 diff. voicings the amp has.
Not only does it have a Normal/Bright like Fenders, but is also has, DEEP, DARK 7 THICK to add to the other two ! - very cool !!!

OK, so you asked about the ElDiablo, but i have not read any thing about that model yet - sorry !

I have one. The 60c is my main amp. It is the most versatile 2 channel amp I have ever used. People into metal feel it is not aggressive enough. I play country, blues to classic rock and it does a great job for me. It seems to take pedals well also. It is easily on par with Mesa or Bad Cat for build quality. It has a speaker compensated line out for recording or going to the board as well

The Black Pearl is being played by Brent Mason a bit now (you see it at tdpri in his pedalboard video). It is a Vox-Matchless type amp, and is built far better than the reissue AC30, so the price is not out of line with it.

Here are a couple of clips of the El Diablo 60c with pedals ... Both are clean channel.

I played one and was expecting it to be great but was really dissappointed with it. Talking about the high gain channel- it has good bottom end and it's great for chording and heavy rythem but wasn't good at all for soloing.

Well i tried the 60 watter ,and was not impressed from the Distortion! And i was testing it for Distortion ,so i don't know hoe cleans are.The gain structure is somehow "dead" for my ears.I played the Engl Fireball the same day ,and the Diablo sounded like ss to me.But that's just me!

Re: Genz Benz El Diablo

I think the amp is really viewed incorrectly by most people. It is not really a metal style amp to me. It is a clean to blues to rock amp. I think of it like a Legacy, but with more tweakability. It has been compared to Bogner, but I do not not know, it has a voice of its own to me. Is is a very smooth gain structure really, which puts a lot of people off. So if you want aggressive it may not do it. If you like classic distortion and very smoother Santanaish leads it will do a great job.

The only reason I have the pedalboard is that I have been working very hard to get a "low volume" go anywhere set up that I get similar sounds with a wide variety of amps. If I did not need to do switching on the fly to cover a lot of things, it would be the perfect amp. I could use one more channel from it.

I recently won a 60watt combo from eBay. It came from the previous owner with both the stock EL34's and 6L6's. I installed the 6L6's based on the "it's not metal enough" comments I had heard. Metal wasn't my sole criteria for this amp but it was important to me. So I can't really comment on the stock EL34's but with 6L6's the amp is very aptly named. Everything from warm, rich, dynamic cleans to full-blown metal crunch. It offers a great deal of tweaking options including a tube contour, compression and a "global attack" that serves as a great lead mid/treble boost. But that's not to say it's difficult to understand. You can pretty much set it up instinctively then tweak it with the above features to find your sound. I agree it has a voice all it's own that falls someplace between a "flabby" Marshall and a "tigh and compressed" Mesa sound. I find it shines equally with single coils or humbuckers which is great since my main guitar is an HSS Strat. In my opinion, those who cannot find a good sound with the amp have preconceived notions of what an amp "should" sound like. It won't sound exactly like a Fender, Marshall or Mesa. It sounds like a Genz Benz. And for me that sounds just right.

I do not play metal and like the EL34's but this is my experience as well.

These amps sound alot like Laneys to me, but i think Laneys are alot better in terms of tone. Besides, they can do metal easy. Give it a boost pedal or an EQ and you can play whatever you want.
