George L's cables worth it?

Been seriously contemplating getting setup with George L's cables lately (or maybe the Planet Waves solderless kit). Right now I've just got the usual cheapo colored cables between my pedals. I don't have Eric Johnson's ears, but I'm still thinking that perhaps I'm losing tone or maybe gaining noise because of my cheap cables.

I'm running SD-equiped ESPs and Strats, through a BBE wah, "ultimate mod" TS9, and Visual Sound Route 66 and H20 into a pair of Traynor YCS100H tube heads.

Anyways... just curious as to you guys' actual experience with George L's and how much of a difference they make in tone or noise. Thanks.

Paid 70 bucks for mine. Hated them. never use them anymore

What a nitemare.

I like my cables soldered together, thank you very much.

Re: George L's cables worth it?

I've used the Planet Waves solderless patch cables for a couple years now . . . no real issues, and there was a noticeable increase in sound quality when I swapped out the crappy 1$ patch cables that I had been using. . . but I was using a setup with 7 pedals at the time, so there was a lot of mediocre cable being replaced. I think the key with the solderless stuff is that you have to follow the instructions and seat them very well, then screw them in tightly.

Re: George L's cables worth it?

I've been using George L's solderless for years not (about 10 years)...maybe more!) and I love them!

If you put them together like they say to you will have little to no failure and the tone is tops!

I use george L's SOLDERED with neutrik jacks - don't care for solderless - nothing beats good hot ole solder!

I hear ya but I gotta tell ya...nothing beats solderless when you can make a cable repair, back stage, in the dark in 45 seconds...and yes, I have done it!

I like the Bill Lawrence cables - seems to be a bit of an upgrade over George L's.

you can really hear the difference in george l's I had cheap cables and this guy at the store was telling how good they sound so I tried them out and liked them. Sound is clear and clean and brighter. All my patch cables are G.L's also. If you picky about tone check them out.

I have a custom Loop Master switcher box that was made to A/B between 2 pedals with one stomp...a few weeks ago I got curious and put a 20 foot George L's cable in loop A and an 18 foot DiMarzio (Belden/Switchcraft) cable in loop B and toggled between them...the difference was not at all subtle IMHO. The difference was clear. The George L cable is cleaner, stronger and more crisp.

It's not that the GL cables add top end but they let more of your guitars top end shine through.

This is not a good or a bad thing...there are reasons to have and use all kinds of cables.

Christian, I'm beginning to see how crude and unprofessional I am. I plugged a 6" George L into my amps input and pinched the free end between my index finger and thumb. I repeated the process with several other patch cords including some solderless Live Wires. The hum from the George L's was significantly brighter and louder than any other cable. I don't know how to accurately describe the difference except that, to me, they seem to conduct more sound!

Setting them up in a looper was eye opening for me...I always felt like they were brighter, more clear, crisp sounding but when you can switch form one to the other in a split second you can realyl hear the difference!

It's funny...I know some guys that don't like the extra crisp nature of GL's...

If you are trying to tonwe down your top end I'd say that a "lesser" cable might be a good tool...For me...using smaller, darker amps I need all the cut I can get so I love the GL's stuff plus like I said above, making repairs back stage in 15 seconds with NO tools is a life saver!

Re: George L's cables worth it?

The only place I don'e use them on my board is in and out of the Peterson tuner where the Strobo-Stomps jacks don't grasp the ends firmly enough ........ but in all fairness, that's a Peterson issue.

Re: George L's cables worth it?

here in my circle
the George L's are the benchmark
"I think my cable is the problem"
"hang on try this George L"
"nope, must be the pedal"

or
the one I heard tonite

"My guitar is buzzing"
"Go home, unplug that crappy pedal board, plug a George L from the guitar to the amp and see if it still buzzes"
