getting a Gary Moore Tone

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

I always wanted a more gary tone....who's gary more?

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

I'm tempted to say Seth Lover (SH-55).

It has the honky, middy quality that he has..

but wait - it depends. Which Gary Moore do you want? Blues, Thin Lizzy, the "Metal" 80s era?

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

If it's the tone from that $2 million Les Paul that Gary had, I vote for the bridge pup from the Custom Shop Peter Green set.

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

and what pickup for his rock-era kinda' sound ? :)
Well I'm betting that bridge pup from the Green set would cover the Thin Lizzy. Those years sound PAF'ish to me. Bump up to a '59 or maybe a PG if you want it a little more rockin'.

Didn't GM go Dirty Fingers at one point? I could plug backin' down a Custom for a TL tone but I would have to try working with that Green set first if I wanted to hit his blues tone too.

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

...do you mean Gary Moore when he's trying to sound like Gary Moore or Gary Moore when he's trying to sound like Peter Green?

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

I mean the tone of Parisiene Walkways (Live), in the very best of GM (1998)
or empty rooms and still got the blues in the same album....

Well I didn't see him play it live in the late 90's however...someone emailed me a YouTube video link of Parisienne Walkways a while back. He's playing a Paula in that one and it sure looks like the Greeny. I'm still gonna plug that Custom Shop Peter Green Set! :smokin:

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

He played a strat in "Still got the Blues" Album Im told.

He also used the Marshall guv'nor pedal if thats any help, Not the new Guv'nor Plus !!!

He also Uses a strat in the "Empty Rooms" Video So Im assuming he used it for the album ?

Dont know what hes using in the "Out in the fields" Song but heres 2 pics i just took from the video. The video is a live one also.

...

I'm associating the Strat with Corridors of Power too for some reason. It may be time to go dredge through my vinyl. A lot of water under the brige since those days...

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

With a set of Seth Lovers in a Gibson LP, a modified Tubescreamer into an Orange 1/2 stack that was quite loud, I got close to his tone on 'Parisienne Walkways - live' from Blues Alive, which I believe may be the same live version you're talking about.

With this setup, I also managed the 28 second sustained note that's his live trademark of this song. I always liked the Seths, but I found a pair of pickups that I like better and that can still nail that tone if I want to :)

He used a Strat for a few songs on 'Still Got The Blues' album (Texas Blues I think), but his main setup for this album was the Greeny LP, an originl Marshall Guv'nor pedal and a prototype of what became the Marshall JTM45 Re-issue head.

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

Gary played another 59 Les Paul on Still Got the Blues in addition to Greeny. It's a Les Paul that the guys on the LPF call "Stripe". I guess one of the members used to own it before Gary. It looks a lot like Greeny but has the covers removed so it has two black PAF's showing. He used this guitar for more of the high gain blues numbers and then used Greeny for more of the slow blues numbers and ballads. On the "Blues Alive" DVD and "An Evening of the Blues" VHS he plays this guitar a lot more than Greeny and it really smokes. I think Seth Lovers, Alnico II pros or even 59's would get you real close to his tone, then, you might want to add some sort of stomp box for additional gain. I actually have a Duncan Custom bridge and Seth Lover neck in my Les Paul Studio and this combo is great for Gary tone. If your guitar is all mahogany then it lacks the maple cap that Gary has on his LP. A custom might work well to balance things out and keep a little of the top end that an all mahogany guitar might take away.

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

I read an interview with GM where he said he used Tube Screamers on Still got the blues. There are songs on the album where the tone is very TS like...

Gary was never only a Les Paul guy. He also used Strats and other Gibson models. The guy loves guitars. :)
To my ears:
An overdrive, crancked mids on the amp... no scooping for Gary... that's the ball-park for me. A Les Paul also helps :).

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

For his blues stuff. Use a Les Paul with Antiquities, Custom Shop Greeny set, or Seth Lovers. Keep in mind that regardless what pup you use, Gary still keeps his amp settings pretty "toppy" as he would say. He likes the treble.

Easy use a Alnico II Pro set !! I have the Live Blues and Blues Alive in both the Video and CD. Alnico II's in a Paul through a Soldano SLO 100 will nail those tones!!

Re: getting a Gary Moore Tone

I know that mid eighties (out in the fields/wild frontier) he was very fond of Hammer guitars and also PRS although I don't know if the pickups were stock or not. Although, with most succesful/great players most of it is in the fingers.
