Hey, I used to use this forum a really long time ago and have re-registered because I am looking to get a new amp. Here is what I'm looking for-

I'm looking for something around 50 watts, all tube. I could go with either head or combo but if I get a combo it has to be 2x12's or maybe 2x10's, no buts. I would kind of like a head because I can get a 2x12 avatar cab with vintage 30's in it for real cheap. I'm going to be getting this amp on ebay, and I'm willing to wait till the one I want comes along. I don't really want a marshall or mesa because I don't want to pay for a name... dont get me wrong I love mesa's but I'm looking for something better for the budget. I don't want any effects or modeling built in except maybe for reverb, all of my effects will be outside the amp. I don't have a reverb right now and usually built in reverb sounds much better so that would be nice to have but not a total requirement. Two channels are enough, or even one channel with a footswitch for the gain would be ok, although it would be nice to set the eq's seperately. It's got to have a footswitch to switch from clean to gain though. I play almost only rythm, I want a loud, warm, buttery tone which I suppose probably sounds like I'm describing a marshall. I'm thinking along the lines of latter era Tool sound, not a scooped mids early Metallica kind of sound. For price, i'm thinking less than 850 for a combo and less than 650 for just a head (ebay prices, keep in mind.)

Phew, that was a mouthful. Given all of these parameters, here's what I have thought about-
Laney gh50l head- no reverb or seperate eq's but a damn good price and very simple setup, i have heard it sounds great but can't try one around here :(
Peavey 5150 65w combo- I also cannot try this amp but people seem to like it, I really hate peavey guitars though. It's right in my price/feature range too.
There's also the laney tt50h head which has reverb and seperate eq's but it is much more than the gh50l.

I really don't know what else is out there, there are just so many different amp companies which is why I'm posting here. So can you guys tell me what you think of the amps I've thought of or let me know what else is out there? I'm drowning in options!

ps the guitar is a schecter c-1 classic with a jb/jazz combo if that matters.

You can get some Rivera models for that kind of coin. The Mesa F50 is also a great amp and is in your price range.

F-50 is awesome! If I can get one I would buy one in a heart beat :D

Mesa F-50 or Carvin Legacy. I own a Legacy and I LOVE it, it does exactly what you described above, and it has it's own sound. I don't think there is any better value on amps out there, for what you get quality wise vs. cost. The F-50 you can get relatively cheap too and they rock also.

Just got an F50 so have to throw my vote that way ;) :D

BUT...the F-30 is as loud as any 50 watt Marshall or Laney and is less expensive. Plus the EL 84's give it a bit more "british" vibe.

From my recent amp search over the past few months, I believe you are not "paying for the name" with MESA products, especially the F series. They are a bargain, AFAIC. But you ARE paying for the name with the current Marshall line (and I hate to say that as I've been a Marshall fanatic for many years). Very disappointed with Marshall's quality and tone vs. price ratio on the MGs, ATVs,RI, and 2000 series amps. Mesa F-series is a much better buy from a build quality and variety of sounds standpoint.

You may wish to look at my "mini-review" I posted a few days ago.

You should prolly also look into the Carvin MTS/Bel-Aire, Peavey XXX combos, Traynors, Peavey Classic 50, and Laney's are def underrated.

I checked out the f-50 and it looks absolutely perfect, everything I want and nothing I don't. You can get a 1x12 combo on ebay for around 650-750. Plus mesa makes 1x12 cabs with the same speakers that come in this combo. I think i've found it.... thanks so much guys!!
