Getting a Warmoth...

Dimarzio Air Norton Neck

well, will this sound too bright? I want some Paul Gilbert Tone with little less mid and little more bass (and not muddy)

I was also thinking of going Alder instead of Basswood (since I do a lot of abuse to my guitar) - will that be ok? should I go maple or ebony for the fingerboard?

For the tone you want I think basswod is great but alder is far more durable in my experience. It has a slightly brighter yet pretty balanced tone. With rosewood fingerboard it has a Gibson-esque warmth to it, with maple it is pretty much Fender-ish, ebony is relatively bright but for the definite attack of notes played it is a good chioce for metal.

Considering production quality I must tell that I don't know about Warmoth's present production pros/cons but my 2002 LPS is an awesome, addictive, better-than-sex axe considering both looks, feel and tone.

I ordered 3 guitars from them in the last year & they all had sloppy neck pockets, one I ordered with a 5A top had the quilt totally sawn and/or sanded-out between the PUPs...and from what I've heard I got off easy - Warmoth's quality has really gone down-hill over the last several years.

IMHO, USA Custom Guitar smokes the doors off Warmoth in every catagory except one, selection of body/peghead shapes - The Carve-top -S- with 1/4 sawn maple/perro ferro neck I got from USACG is flawless in EVERY regard, so much so I'm planning on selling most of my Warmoth items & having Tommy and the boys build me some new toys.

I can't imagine that the sloppy neck pocket was their direct fault (unless someone re-programmed their hyper-accurate CNC machines ;) ). CNCs don't make a mistake. I think it's rather wood material or transfer issue. The neck pocket on mine was so accurately cut that it kept the neck in place tight (not bad from a double cutaway body) without screws or anything so I could hang it by the neck.

The thrashed 5A bookmatched top is a rather annoying problem. They shouldn't allow to deliver anything that is not 110%, at least. My one was that.
