Getting cleaner attack, tighter bass tone

My dad plays nightly at a restaurant at the beach. His brother has a decent powered mixer through which the vocals, bass, and guitar get run through. It gets the job done, but because he's not using any other sort of preamp or bass amp, he doesnt have much control over his bass tone and it sounds kinda muffled and lost.

What kind of pedal unit could help him get a tighter, crisper tone through the PA for bass? The bass is a PJ style bass with Antiquity II pickups, so it sounds great through decent rigs, but not when there isnt any decent preamplification going on. Would a good compressor help get a tighter, more cutting bass tone?

I like the sound of a bass with a little bit of peak limiting and a little bit of compression. Also a BBE really brings out the timbre of the bass.

This is what modelers are designed for. The J-Station has several nice bass presets, and I imagine the Pod does also. Something like that should work great.

Maybe one of those Tech21 Sansamp units? I remember hearing decent things about the guitar units.

Yes BBE sonic maximizer. Or a BOSS enhancer pedal.

GET THE AMPEG TUBE DI

you wont be sorry, its awesome and as simple as it gets

Hartke Bass Attack pedal...I promise...the best live bass tone I've ever heard was direct through one of those (could have had something to do with the pa as well though :) )
