its been happeneing for a long time with this amp (jcm200). it hisses and clicks until i play at a volume loud enough to eliminate it. sometimes it just means hitting the strings really hard to make alot of noise. its rather frustrating. can anyone tell me what it is?

Re: getting hissing and clicks at low volume!!!

Yes, could be a pre-amp tube dying. If you have a spare one, try it in each position in turn and see if it makes a difference. If you don't have a spare, just try swapping the pre-amp tubes around to see if that makes any difference.

Re: getting hissing and clicks at low volume!!!

i thought it was just dirty AC noise

If it happens only at home or only at studio and no where else, then yes, I'd suspect your power source.

But if it happens at your house and your friends house and the local club, then it's probably the tubes.

They made tubes easy to replace because they are an expendable item. They wear out. 95% of all tube amp issues are the tubes.

i really suspect the power in my house is the source of noise in my gear... I have been thinking of getting a power conditioner... and i too am looking at getting a TSL

have you taken it somewhere else and tried it out with other power? If not, you really don't know.

ya the extra noise seems to be in my house from various sources... I get a lot of noise even with Humbuckers.... and some humbuckers can be noisier then others.. I've tried to find the sources and found 2 maybes... a fire ditector that is hard wired-(no batteries) outside my door in the hall could be one source... when i step in the hall with my guitar on the noise gets slightly louder... when i raise the guitar towards the detector it gets much louder!!! Maybe something is wrong with that old Detector... we use a bunch of battery ones but that one is wired with AC..

another source is my room is above my dads garage/shop... he has some floresent light fixtures on the ceiling which = my floor..... plus the garage opener is there too... When he has the lights on the noise increases.... But there was noise going on in my room with my gear before those lights were installed..

3rd is i'm on the 2nd floor and the hydro polls with a lot of wires are about 40 feet from my window.... unlikely source but you never know....

Lots of sources...

I jam a fair bit with buddies and my gear is always quieter in other peoples homes...

Re: getting hissing and clicks at low volume!!!

its weird my sound goes away when i hit the strings hard. like mute the stings and strum a hard chord. it cleans right up. and it is rather anoying when i cant play loud at night and i cant make the sound go away. it like reacts to what notes i play and hisses with them :yell:
