Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Which Marshall do you recommend to get the sound. (Use Your Illusion World Tour 2 1992) Slash signature amp is rare especially here.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

im sure the jubilee is probably just as rare. i think if you have a les paul loaded with alnico 2 pro humbuckers any of the tube marshalls that dont have too many bells and whistles (like the tsl for example) will work. i used to get a great slash tone with my modded 50w jcm 800

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Exactly... Les Paul with low-output pickups into some kind of Marshall with more gain then a JMP, but not like TSL amounts.Greenbacks or V30's... doesn't much matter. There's saturation there, but it's not overly saturated. You should be able to hit an open G or A chord and pick out all the individual notes.

At least half of it is attitude.

(plug alert!)

I'm selling a 50watt JCM800 head that's been modded to Jubilee spec...

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Why don't you recommend TSL's ? Is it too harsh or gainy ?

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Yeah... too thin. Too gainy. Midrange is MUCH smaller and pointed. The TSL is probably my least favorite Marshall ever. Pretty good for the "metal" thing but that's about all... Same goes for the JVM series... just too much gain and too scooped sounding.

DSL would be a better choice, or an 800. An old JMP would be great if you juiced it and are in a place where you can open the amp up. The Slash tone is a 'classic rock' voicing but with a bit more gain.

But of course, only Slash is going to sound like Slash...

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Doesn't he goose the input of this Marshall with a graphic EQ? I thought I read that somewhere...

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

no, i think he just has like 25 heads he switches between whenever he feels necessary

but yeah, i'd get some a2 pro's and a jcm800 with a v30 loaded cab

don't get a jm, jvm, or tsl

i've heard the laney AOR normal channel is very very 800 ish and i plan on picking one up, but haven't yet so i can't tell you how well it works

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

that's straight to the power amp though, that doesn't distort it any more, just makes it louder

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

I'd go with a Jubilee or JCM 900. You'll want plenty of gain on tap.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

getting a Marshall to G&R volumes for that type of power amp sweetness is the real trick

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

All is pretty much said. He did have a modded Plexi amp in appetite, I believe a model 1987 he said (I know it was a 50 watter). I'm thinking he used that for Sweet Child.......maybe.

But let me say that the SD Alnico II Pro pickups are such an integral part in his tone. My friend has a black LP standard with alnico pros and can pull off a fairly convincing slash tone with a blues junior! The vibe is definitely there.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

The Appetite amp was a 100 watt metal front modded by Tim Caswell. He still does this mod, called the #39 after the stock number from the rental company. That Boss EQ pedal is used only as a solo boost. Real simple rig. Stupidly simple. ‘Tis partly why it sounds so good!

+1. I have a Marshall 2100 JCM 900 and I had a 2555SL. They are in the same ball park as far as tone and getting the Slash sound. The Slash Sig was a hair warmer (not by much) but, a bit fizzier on the top end than my 2100. The 2555SL had a bit more gain on tap but, you dont need real high gain to get Slash tones anyway. I would go for a Marshall 2500 MKIII or 2100 MKIII. Get one made between 1990 and 1992. Those are the best. BTW, make certain you use Sovtek 12AX7 LPS preamp tubes in it. My 900 didnt come alive until I started using them.

Also, to get the Slash tone you MUST have a Les Paul and use the Tone knob. The tone knob is key! Alnico II pro's, V30's, tune to E flat, and use Nickel 11-48 strings to get you a bit further.

I got an excellent tone similar to Slash when I had a Stiletto Ace. I actually liked it a little better!

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

I'm sure that Slash signature amp is sold better than Kerry King, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde vs. Why Marshall doesn't produce this model again and continuesly ?

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Why doesn't Marshall make a lot of things? Like a 18-25 head in the production line? Why not make an amp with two channels and no bells & whistles that isn't overly gained & scooped? Who knows...

Joe ~ I know you keep saying that amp is too bright... Doesn't make sense to me considering how smooth it "should" be... What kinda cab & speakers are you running it through?

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Moose... the amp is definately bright! So bright, tim said he's thinking about adding the hicut pot as a standard option (but need to drill a hole for it... i did it, who cares). Its not smooth at all, complete opposite end of the spectrum. It doesnt bother me, because when i get the time/parts, I know where to add switches to switch in more lows/low mids into the circuit (lots of 470pf/470k // combinations into the grids, raise to .0022uf first i'll try (on a switch of course)).

Of course, the speakers probably dont help being that they are Eminence GB128's (50watt greenback clones). Love the sound of em, but they might be too bright. Cab is a 2x12 madison amps cab... its old, covered in carpet, doesnt even have the madison logo. Was The_Chris's, bought it cheap cause he's local. so close I can smell him. Very unpleasant. haha

Listen to the lead solo on Nightrain. I wouldnt say thats smooth (at least not compared to my Demeter), but it definately has that grainy, high pitched cut to it. I love it, it sounds so killer, but SO different from my Demeter. If I had to record, I'd use the Demeter for rhythm portions, but use #39 for leads. They just absolutely rip through 'em. they cut like no other. But, I'll probably add a whole crapload of miniswitches to switch some things into an out of the circuit, to make it more versatile. Also figured out a way to bypass the entire mod. The Master volume on it is actually Pre-phase inverter. So I was thinking of adding a post-pi MV. That and a switch to take the mod components out of the circuit will make that amp one beast and a half. I'd be able to nail Stock 68 plexi, Metalfront plexi, hot rodded, Caswell sounds, and more all out the same amp.

I should probably get on all that.

No way, you've still got that Madison cab? :)

I bet that amp kills though! Between that, your TGP-3 Demeter preamp and the Vox AC-30, you've gotta be done :fing2:
