Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Listen to the lead solo on Nightrain. I wouldnt say thats smooth (at least not compared to my Demeter), but it definately has that grainy, high pitched cut to it. I love it, it sounds so killer, but SO different from my Demeter. If I had to record, I'd use the Demeter for rhythm portions, but use #39 for leads. They just absolutely rip through 'em. they cut like no other. But, I'll probably add a whole crapload of miniswitches to switch some things into an out of the circuit, to make it more versatile. Also figured out a way to bypass the entire mod. The Master volume on it is actually Pre-phase inverter. So I was thinking of adding a post-pi MV. That and a switch to take the mod components out of the circuit will make that amp one beast and a half. I'd be able to nail Stock 68 plexi, Metalfront plexi, hot rodded, Caswell sounds, and more all out the same amp.

You run the Demeter into the same cab? And it's "smooth"???

Inneresting...

Personally I'd think about getting a better cab. Isn't Madison some import, MDF thing?

As for modding Marshalls... Been down that road, both myself and with friends... JMP's, Majors, 800's...

Generally if the amp isn't pretty close to the mark from the beginning then mods really aren't the answer... A new amp is the answer. At the least it's expensive and doesn't yield the tone... at the worst the amp turns into an unreliable monster.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

+1 on the avoid the TSL issue.

I've been playing mostly Marhsall TSLs in my new group and mostly AVTs in my previous group (thats what the places we gig in have to offer).

The AVT which is not a great amp even when compared with other hybrids does a better job covering classic rock sounds and Slash on his crunch channel then the TSL.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Have you tried Marshall Vintage Moderns ? What do you think of those amps?
I consider plenty now. Look at these.

Every one I've played has been exceedingly bright...

Painfully bright.

Treble & presence off... bass on 10... still WAAAAAY too bright. EQ controls aren't very effective... Not much difference between 0 and 10. More like "on" vs. "off" really.

Yesterday I was out & about... Played a Randall Lynch Box... then a Vintage Modern and the VM sounded like it was broken. A toy.

They've all been like that. Couple different heads and at least two combos.

I wouldn't buy a "new" Marshall... not with my own money.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Is there anyone played both of Jubilee and Vintage Modern ? I didn't heard from anybody this amp is bright. Is it told this amp has warm tones.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

I must recomend Ceriatone here. When prices start getting too high for the originals IMO ceriatone is the way to go. They can ship anywhere and they can perform any mod you like on your amp. Check them out before you rule out the older amps in favour of the new ones...

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

I can't comment on the TSL. I've never played thru one. The DSL will get you fairly close, but not all the way there and it is a very good amp with lots more versatility than most marshalls. You would have significantly more luck with a JCM-900 MkIII in attaining the sound you seek. Those really nail the tone you are looking for and they are inexpensive.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

The key to his tone is: one bath a week, a hat, and an LP at the level of testicles, the amp is not that important, really.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

how did slash get his signature sound before he had his signature amp?

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Price doesn't matter I want one amp and the best for me.

then get his sig amp

why are you looking for his sound with a different amp if money is not an issue

that doesn't make any ****in sense

wait it out, find one. You're better off waiting for one to pop up on ebay & buying it than you are trying to get his sound out of stuff he doesn't use

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

how did slash get his signature sound before he had his signature amp?

He didn't think "Gee I'm gonna make a signature sound," he just did what everybody else who knows how to rock does and plugged his Gibson into a Marshall.

My advice to the original poster is to do the same: Forget what anybody else uses, find YOUR favorite guitar and test drive a bunch of loud, crunchy, bad-ass amplifiers until you find your groove. If you dig Slash's tone you should just try every amp you can find with EL34's in it.

I mean you're not Slash.....why try and be him? Be YOU.

It seems I got any answer i don't want to. Nonetheless, thanks..
I mean price doesn't matter up to a point.
I can afford recent Marshall models. However It cost 8.000 $ to get the signature amp from abroad to my country AT LEAST. Of course I'm not Slash I listen many kind of music apart from GNR, but the tone i told is i want to get as a lotta people do.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Well then you'd probably be satisfied with most british-style amps. If it was me I'd get an Orange cuz they look so cool but you'd probably be happy with a JCM800 or a Splawn or anything like that really man...

Where are you?

Many countries have their own takes on Marshalls or other expensive to import brands.

We have good, cheap, locally made 1970's Plexi and AC30 clones going around here used. I almost bought a Plexi clone head a day before I was converted to small amps.

Re: Getting Slash sound from Marshall without signature amp.

Jubilees are special amps but quite overhyped indeed. I have passed up at least 6 in the last few years. I always get caught up in the hype and then realize its just a nice version of an 80s Marshall.

I mean if you are literally trying to get the Slash LIVE sound or the Use Your Illusion sound, I think V30s are a big part of it. Many people agree that later Marshall 2210 models have some of the Jube vibe in them, and I am somewhat inclined to agree. Many also agree older JCM800s 2203/2204, esp mid to late 80s "brighter" models with a Marshall Guvnor pedal will get you there. 2 respected techs have said the Jube diode is basically a MArshall Guvnor pedal built into the amp.

I have also heard those tones copped well on Marshalls with DS1s, OCDs, etc, AND DSL's, Vintage Moderns, certain Mesas (Stiletto), etc etc.

As far as the AFD Caswell amp - that whole story surfaced on the net 3 - 4 years ago. It was all good fun - hell its rumored Lynch used the same amp. All good and well, but cmon - its a lot of urban legend and myth. Be careful about chasing those "Fountain of Youth"-type / Indiana Jones tales down. I have heard so many variations of the Slash and Izzy tales from those sessions its not even funny. Mike Klink, the producer of AFD, said in print he used Marshalls for Slash and Carvins for Izzy - where many tell me Izzy used a Mesa MArk III. hmmmmm? Then a girl who knows him tells me Klink said he used Jubilees on AFD - and I confronted her with the fact that Jubes barely came out AFTER AFD was recorded in 86 - she just got mad and huffed lol. Maybe Slash had an early release or prototype? Geffen did sink a lot into G n R yknow!

Sooooo its all just good fun, but cmon - the urban legend of #39 is even getting misquoted on this thread.

The problem with Plexis is that they need a half stack or at least a 2X12 to do their thing.

The problem with buying a half stack is that it doesn't come with a roadie that would help you carry it around... :D
