GFS dream90 magnets?

Hey guys,I have a pair of GFS dream 90 pickups I bought on a whim a few years back. I was wondering if anyone knew what type of magnets they use? I can't find the info on their site. I have a JB I would like to try a ceramic or a2 in.

Welcome aboard!

I think they're A5's, which is pretty much the standard. Doesn't really what mag's in a PU, HB or P-90. Change them out & get the EQ that fits your guitar.

Re: GFS dream90 magnets?

BTW, If you get confused (as I have) the mags in a P-90 are seated repelling each other, not attracting.

I'm a big fan of an A8/A4 in a bridge P-90, for a powerful, warm tone. In the neck, twin A5's are excellent, as is an A5/A4 which is a bit warmer and fuller.

I like the JB2 a lot. Takes off the excess treble and bulks up the mids.

Re: GFS dream90 magnets?

i'm curious what you make of these pickups, might have to try in the neck position of an SG

Re: GFS dream90 magnets?

The Mean 90 is pretty popular here (the Dream 90 somewhat less). One in the neck with a HB in the bridge is a very good combo.

Do you REALLY wanna mod this p'up?

Get a Mean90. Those are made like Gibson P-94s.

HTH,

Re: GFS dream90 magnets?

I haven't tried a Dream 90, but the Mean 90 is excellent. Great tone as is, but easy to swap mags to dial it in to be more precicely what you want.

In an SG (neck or bridge) the Mean 90 works its magic. It's no less perfect in a LP neck or bridge.

Re: GFS dream90 magnets?

I'm looking at putting in a set of GFS Mean 90's to replace either the Seth Lovers in my PRS SE Custome Semi-hollow or the SD Antiquity HB's in my Epi Dot. Both guitars sound too warm.

On which guitar do you think the GFS would be better for. I'm quite clumsy with wiring cavities and my eyesight is not the best, so I'd only like to this only once, armed with your inputs. Thanks.

p.s. my apologies. I forgot about not ressurecting old threads.

How do the Dream90's and Mean90's differ in tone? I've had a set of Dream90's (actually have one in a strat I'm working on now), but I've never tried the Mean90's.

From the GFS website:

"How do they differ from the Dreams?? We've gone to a different Magnet structure, different coil size, added an expensive German Silver baseplate, and completely revamped to output level. We slightly "age" Alnico V magnets, and wrap the coils with Formvar 42 gauge wire. The result is a pickup that is FAR more aggressive in the lower mids, yet still has a crisp and clear high end. Think of the Mean 90's as a 4-10 Tweed Bassman and the Dream 90's as a Tweed Deluxe. The Dreams are more modern sounding and overdrive an amp with a decided CRUNCH- The Means are smoother- warmer, fuller and a tad louder. If you like Vintage Tones and really want to FEEL your pick attack on the strings- I think the Mean 90 may be the best pickup currently available"
