GFS hybrid idea

hey guys, I've been seeing all these threads about hybrids and have been intrigued. Problem is that I don't have $160 just floating around for a '59 and a Custom 5, so I was wondering if you guys think a GFS crunchy pat/vintage 59 would be a good idea. It seems to me like a similar idea to the 59/custom 5 hybrid that the sticky thread is going nuts about.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

That would be the GFS equivalent i think, but FYI a c/59 just went up for sale on the Trading board (not mine) for like $50. Same as the 2 GFS pups. Grab it up!

Re: GFS hybrid idea

Hey thanks for the notification man, but I'm kinda strapped for any cash whatsoever right now, this thread is really just a hypothetical for future projects. Thanks anyway though.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

^ i agree; having looked at their page the crunchy "PAT" appears to be quite similar (ie reverse-engineered) to the SH-5 ie 14K and described as tons of output, so is likely wound with 43AWG, with a ceramic mag. the bridge vintage '59 8.5-8.8K@42AWG, so is a little hotter than a duncan PAF on paper...

should be an option if you can't find used duncans, but i wouldn't expect it to sound quite as good. not knocking GFS, i'd just expect duncan coils to have a lot more character.
on the plus side, you'll probably dislodge enough potting wax to pot another 10 pickups in the process

Re: GFS hybrid idea

they're not shy with their potting wax, no. that's not a bad thing either, unless you're planning to dismantle it and don't want little bits of wax all over the place heh heh

Re: GFS hybrid idea

Yup, Crunchy Pat is Ceramic, you want the Alnico Fat Pat if you want do do a Custom 5 (not Custom) / 59 hybrid.

I'll let you know how it works, I've got a Fat Pat, Crunchy Pat, and a pair of GFS 59s here that arrived just before I left for vacation, now I'm back and the weekend is upon us. :D

You're gonna do that? PLEASE let me know I'm really curious!

Hey Dominus, how do you like the GFS 59? A lot of ppl here don't like it, but I've read other places that its pretty good. I'm thinking about maybe getting one for my Squier.

It's still new in the box. :) I'll pop all three into the guitar to get a feel for what each one sounds like stock, then do my hybrids.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

That does sound pretty good. That clip makes me wonder how ppl could dislike it so much. Although I am only listening to it through my laptop speakers.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

Still waiting on the new Dean to finish drying. Should get to testing the regular pickups tomorrow. :D

Re: GFS hybrid idea

so did you already make the hybrid pickup? How was the wax?

I did make a GFS hybrid previously, with one of the Power Rail pickups and that Artec hexhead one. Plenty of wax to go around, but there was plenty on a Dimarzio that I removed a cover from, as well as the Duncan Designed hybrid I made. I just swept all the excess wax off and pitched it. :D

Got another house showing tomorrow, so I have to clean up for that, can't make a mess tonight. :(
