GFS hybrid idea

Re: GFS hybrid idea

The GFS '59 sounds decent enough, not powerful enough for my tastes, but the clean was really sweet. Would make a good neck pickup, but I think it will match an SD '59 pretty well.

The Fat Pat sounds much better, could use a tad more bite, but that could be the A5 magnet. About to pop in the Crunchy Pat to see if that's where this guitar needs to be. It does kinda sound like a Custom 5 though. I think this hybrid could be the economical 59/Custom. :D

Crunchy Pat - MUCH better! These coils need the ceramic magnet. Half tempted to get an A8 and swap out the A5 in the Fat Pat.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I did make a GFS hybrid previously, with one of the Power Rail pickups and that Artec hexhead one. Plenty of wax to go around, but there was plenty on a Dimarzio that I removed a cover from, as well as the Duncan Designed hybrid I made. I just swept all the excess wax off and pitched it. :D

Got another house showing tomorrow, so I have to clean up for that, can't make a mess tonight. :(

no rush man

Re: GFS hybrid idea

Ended up leaving the Crunchy Pat stock, sounds awesome the way it is. Now I'm waiting on the next two Deans to cure. :D

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I've got a either a crunchy rails, or power rails, I always forget which is which. Mine has the wider rails in chrome over black bobbins.

I'd be interested in trading for something interesting and equivalent. PM me if interested.

I'm getting ready to do a Warmoth Baritone Tele with a Neo-09T Tele pickup in the neck, and a Hot Liverpool (TV Jones/Filltertron style) in the bridge. Something a lil' quirky & quite a departure from my 7 string, so it won't be a typical shred-stick, hoping that the tones & feel will inspire some different writing.

I'd like to also check out their VEH (Vintage Extra Hot) pickups.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

Has anybody completed the gfs hybrid thing yet? I was curious about.
I still have to do mine anyway (a VEH crossed with a Classic II with A2 or UOA5 magnet), maybe this next weekend.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I found the Crunchy PATs to sound generic to me... the VEH was outstanding. I thought the VEH was more of a 59' sound than the Crunchy PAT.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

This is a very interesting idea. Are GFS even quality to begin with though? I've never seen or used them.

I made two hybrids taking the Crunchy Rails and one of the hexhead humbuckers they had on clearance (that I believe was made by Artec.) Turned out nice and aggressive. Never got around to making the 59/PAT hybrid, but I like both the Fat and Crunchy PAT models. I've also installed an A8 into a VEH, that makes a great sounding pickup as well. (The VEH stock is pretty good too, but the A8 just gives it a little more power.)

I've been tempted to stick a thick ceramic into a VEH to see what happens. :nana:

Very strange, the stock VEH is one of the worst pickup I've ever used in my guitars, very brittle, completely lacking definition and a bit weak.
Since I had a Crunchy PAT around I tried swapping the magnet between the two and things got way way better on both, the Crunchy lost is sharpness and got very musical, the VEH sounded very defined but not harsh, a little more even, perfect for my detuned short scale guitar.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I have a GFS V59 in the bridge on my EPI LP and am VERY happy with it, going to get a V59N to match it up.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

GFS pickups are not that bad, they obviously lack the quality of SD but if you try disassembling one you'll see that the construction is decent (lot of wax and cheap plastic indeed). They're very cheap because they're made who-knows-where (where Artec is?).
My 70s single coil set sound very good, the classic II humbucker and the fat pat too.
I think that putting them in high end guitars is a nonsense, apart from that, in any other cases, they're honest products.
(the Veh sounds to my ears bad anyway...)

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I would like to find someone who sells the wood spacers for pups, the GFS V59 comes with plastic spacer and a true 59 has wood spacers. I have came to really like my 59, quiet, decent punch and growl and very nice harmonics when you drag your thumb on leads.

Re: GFS hybrid idea

I don't think you can hear any difference in sound between wood and plastic.
Anyway you can build yourself a wood spacer using balsa or any other piece of light wood around, you only need a cutter
