Gibson 2019 line-up

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

Lol. The other day i saw a beautiful guitar with those robotic tuners on them. Lol, it was a deal breaker for me. Lol, i’d pay more money NOT to be bothered with that stuff.

Wake me when they reintroduce the ES-295. If I’m going to blow the wad, I’m going to really blow the wad.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

I didn't mind the robotuners..I don't own one, but I have a few students with them. I think it is not an elegant solution, though. I'd like to see how the 'save different tunings' idea is in 10 years.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

honestly my biggest concern with the robo tuners is who will repair it if/when it breaks?

Sure, if it breaks, you’re no worse off than if you never owned it. Really, though, perhaps it’s The impulse compulsive side of me, but it would really piss me off. I very well could be the minority here but i already worry enough about stuff breaking, going bad, or wearing out. I can see where other people could argue otherwise but to me, no thanks.

60 bucks can get you new takeoff robotuners all day long

Not that you want em, according to the general consensus...

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

What was the actual problem robo tuners were supposed to solve? Speed in tuning? Tuning accuracy? If one can’t tune a guitar... shouldn’t they find another hobby?

I’d think robo intonation - now there’s a useful innovation. Change string gauge and zip, ready to rock.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

I played what would now be a modern. The thing was epic awesome. Traditional - no. But felt/played/sounded EXCELLENT. In Blueberry burst - see thread on it.

Sanded heel, push/pulls, etc... Should have made those in 1980.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

Well they keep taking em off and selling em for cheaper and cheaper...and writing articles about how they suck.... so...

The percentage of guitar players that are big enough gear heads that they would write articles about not liking a particular piece is not a representative sample size of the guitar playing population at large.

And with a signature "new stuff always sucks", it's clearly not an objective standpoint that you're coming from.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

I want a 67 Flying V with a reverse Explorer headstock and a floyd.

His bags are packed Happy... just tap it in...

Alternate tunings? Drop down a half step with the push of a button? They sure gave culture shock to alot of players, but as time has passed, I keep hearing more and more they are actually pretty good. My next thing to try is a Zero nut

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

If you really think about it, Gibson is in a tough spot. Imagine if they hadn't come out of this recent reorganization as a viable company, and ceased making new guitars altogether. Yes, the used market prices would go through the roof, but anything any of us wants would still be out there if we didn't mind paying the price for it. Every, and any, configuration of every model has been done, and there is no shortage of used Gibsons for sale. In essence we don't need Gibson to exist as a ongoing business because what we want has been made for decades.

So when you look at the 2019 lineup, yes you can find things they should be making, or criticize various aspects of what they do offer; however when they try to innovate they fail. Imagine if Chevy could only sell 57 Chevy Bel Air's and 58 Corvettes, and all of their newer cars failed? You would get really sick of seeing 57 Chevy's in different colors, but their efforts to innovate don't work. I really think that's where Gibson is right now. We don't want robo tuners, or richlite fretboards, but what else can they come up with? PRS is selling Strats with 3x3 headstocks, maybe Gibson will too, or they will start making Brian May guitars.

I think steering the Gibson ship is not an easy job, and hopefully they have some really smart people in high levels of this company. I hope they survive and continue making Les Pauls, and 335's for a long time, but I think they may need to come up with something more to offer. They have to be about more than nostalgia.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

At least they are doing the nostalgia thing right with regards to Kramer now: reissue Nightswan and Sambora (and new Stagemasters)! Now that is awesome!

I really hope that these models do honour to their legacy.

As somebody that HAD robo tuners I can say that the idea is great, but the actual application needs a lot of work.
The brass nut binds badly. Even the replacement nut they sent me free was of little help.
The tuners aren’t accurate enough. Sometimes you need to attempt the tuning several times before it gets it right.

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

See, that's the thing. I like the idea of multiple tunings, but accuracy has to be there. I also don't like tiny servo motors that will eventually break, but I am still sold on the idea of multiple tunings- the TransTrem on Steinbergers did this, and the Variax solved it a different way, too. The zero fret, however, is a wonderful idea.

I'm gonna be seriously pis*ed if the Nightswans go for anything under $4K!!! LOL!!!

And any of these new Gibsons got volutes??? LOL!!!

Re: Gibson 2019 line-up

Aside from ditching the really weird stuff (that happened a few years ago already, didn't it?) it's still not a very simple lineup. 4 Les Pauls is fine, but 3 junior/special models is too many, there's too many SG models, and if anything needed the modern treatment (locking tuners, compound radius fretboard, etc), you'd think it would be the V and Explorer. I think it would stick with the original spirit of those models to go modern only.

Mostly I just don't see anything that I would actually want to buy.

From a business perspective, it'd be interesting to see them discontinue a model or two entirely for a couple years just to draw hype when they reintroduce it. For example, drop the Firebird for a few years.
