Hey all, any idea what an equivalent SD wind would be. It measures about 8.6k isn, but with a ceramic mag. I actually like it as a bridge PUP, with a very dark guitar &Bogner 101b combo, but would like other 'color' options as vain as that may be...:D.

What gauge wire is it, seems like possibly just a PAF-ish wind with ceramic(?). IF I were to call the custom shop, what spec, would I roughly tell them to point them in the right direction etc...

Actually, the 496R sounds extremely well with several different Alnico magnets as a BRIDGE p'up.

It works very well with an UOA5 mag, paired with an APH-1n with an A3 in the neck.

I call this mag combo the "Vintage Whisperer™".

The Duncan p'up that comes closer is the WholeLottaHumbucker bridge p'up.

I'd like to try one in the bridge slot with an alnico. Has no appeal to me in it's stock form as a neck PU.

It's pretty much an overwound 490r. Duncan doesn't really have many winds in that range, the Whole Lotta Humbucker is the only high 8k PAF type in the lineup. Of course, they can wind you anything you want, if you call them.

Yea, I figured they could if I had to go that route, but wasn't sure if it was indeed just a hot PAF wind or was Gibson doing some other magic sorcery. It's a weird combo(?), PAF with ceramic, so thought maybe they are using something other than your typical 42 gauge wire etc....

If I were to build my own from a WholeLottaBucker bobbins, would a standard ceramic magnet from ebayer addiction-fx suffice?

I think that this design, a hot NECK p'up is well done. AWG#42 SPN, but this wind has a different voice than a BB2, BB3 or '57 Classic Plus. It's a bit more articulate than average. With an UOA5 mag really cuts through the mix; it's like a pumped-up Jazz bridge but without the sharp pick attack and less character. It'll shine with an A8 mag doing fast palm-muting riffs, as the lows are TIGHT.

I'd say so, however, I fail to see the point in doin' it, as there are a lot of other p'ups better suited for their respectives tasks.

I guess it could appeal to some Traditional Jazz player... but as a neck p'up, this mag is NOT a good match.

As a neck p'up, this wind works only with a ceramic mag and setup a bit far away from the strings. It's much better as a bridge p'up, if you ask me.

Well, I now have one in the neck slot of my Ibanez Sabre - this one came with a Warmouth Tele neck and has an ebony fingerboard with locking tuners... Mark Cearlock just did some work on the wiring for me last week.
I have a Rio BBQ at the bridge and the 496R in the neck..... I haven't had a chance to do anything other than try it out at home with my Fender Blues Jr. It sounds OK if maybe a bit bright and clear, I don't usually play through a fuzz or distortion pedal btw.... I did recently buy a used Marshall Jackhammer - that seemed to liven it quite a bit.
But maybe I should be looking for something else in the neck?

While we're giving our useless takes... Take one 496R coil and one 490R coil, put them together with an A4 or A5 = badass neck pickup.

Isn't the Pearly Gates a slightly higher-output PAF type pickup?.
