Gibson 498T - 1st impressions

Re: Gibson 498T - 1st impressions

How does the 498 sound with a ceramic? Anything like the Custom? My next guitar is going to be the SGJ which comes with the 490 set. I already know that I don't like those pups. I prefer high output ceramics since I play metal. Thinking of possibly doing a mag swap in the 490T to A8 and A5 in the 490R which I know I like. Will an A8 490T be too much?

498t sings with a ceramic; you owe yourself a try. Very close to an unwaxed Super D.

I think 500t is supposed to have 1K's worth more wire in total, 498t is wound with more wire on one coil (screwcoil?) than the other...

I seem to remember reading that Gibson only has 3 winds for their R/T series, and that the 498T and 500T are the same wind, the difference being that the 498T has an A5 where's the 500T had 3 Ceramic mags (one standard bar and two helper mags in place of the side spacers.....and I want to say that they're double thick as well, but won't find out for sure until later when I slide them out of my 500).

If that is the case, I can tell you that the 500T has a lot of top end and sounds best in very dark guitars. Mine came in my Explorer, and quite frankly, it sounded like ass in that guitar. Currently it's in my Epi Les Paul Custom, and while it does sound better in there, it's still too shrill for my tastes. So in an effort to tame the highs and get a tone similar to an old '82 Les Paul I used to have, it's getting an A5 soon.

498s are usually wound to 13.5-14K. I've had one that was 14.4. 500s are wound up in the 16 range and use 3 double thick mags, one full size in the middle and two half width on the sides. I just want to put a normal size ceramic in the 498. I am curious to try ceramic in a 490T. I believe they are usually wound in the low 8K range. I am just worried that it might get too shrill with low resistance and such a strong magnet. That's why I am thinking maybe A8. I like that pup with an A5 but for they type of music I play and my rig it just doesn't really do it for me.
