Just wondered what you guys think of the Gibson 500T and the dirty fingers pickups? where do they show up in the list of hot bridge pickups??

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I have a bunch of 500T's in my guitars. They are great high gain pickups with a full clear sound. Not at all over-the-top. No mud, and not a buzzsaw pickup. Good mids. Clear high end. Very balanced. I like 'em.

I have no experience with the Dirtyfingers.

Howdy,

My ES-335 came stock with "Dirty Fingers". What was Norlin thinking? They're very powerful, Ceramic monsters. I took 'em out and replaced them with '59s.

If those Dirty Fingers pickups are taking up space, you can send them to me! :naughty:

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I know the Dirty Fingers is 16.something K, and my 500t measured close. I own both pickups. They are both really hot, for some reason I hear the 500T as having more mids, and the Dirty Fingers as being a more round pickup. both are very aggresive, but can clean up.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I've only used the 500T. I had one in the bridge of an SG-X. A crisp, aggressive pup. It split very well. The spilt clean was wonderful, very Fenderish. In HB mode, it cleaned up ok, not great.

I liked it.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

The 500T is a fantastic Ceramic pup IMO. Honestl, it's very similar to a Duncan Distortion. I wouldn't bother to swap one for the other. One of my favorite Gibson pups. Great for all things heavy metal. Maybe better cleans than the Duncan.

The Dirty Fingers - now there is a MANLY pickup. Just hawt filthy nastiness!!!! It's just got more hair on it. Also Love that - but a very different feel than the 500T. Again - think all things John Sykes.

Thanks for all the great information guys! sounds like i cant go wrong with either of these pickups! When installing one of theses in the bridge of my guitar, will they match up with a 57 classic in the neck? or will i have to have some other work done??

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

Sorry I'll dissent and say that I didn't really like the 500T in either guitar I had (LPC and Explorer). It has lots of grit but is too grainy in my opinion. Pushed hard, they over squeal but they're ok with moderate amount of gain but lack something and they sound a bit stifled.

I think there have been some posts on how to make it better with a different magnet which I wished I had tried but instead just sold them.

IMO if you're looking to buy them, there are better pups out there for the money. Right now I'm really digging 57 classics and BBs in an LP and I think the lower output is the right mix for that guitar.

I put an A8 in my 500T, and replaced the side magnets with plastic spacers, basically making it an A8 498T. The stock 500T was the best ceramic PU I've used, but I'm an alnico kind of guy.

Dirty Fingers in a 335? Very strange. They must not have been drug testing at Norlin during that time.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I love both of these pickups in the bridge, I had the 500T/496R set in an older epiphone, then an epi elitist (swapped out for an invader/alnicoIIpro). My current 'playing' guitar is an ltd ec-1000 with a dirty fingers in the bridge.

If the 500T is the Gibson pickup that pegs '10' on the output scale, the dirty fingers is the spinal tap '11'. It's just a little bit more... when you need it.

I think it sounds more raw than the invader, although the invader is voiced heavier in the bass department, the dirty fingers is a midrange machine with a great palm-mute 'thump'

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

The Dirty Fingers is for sure in my top 5 favorite bridge pickups of all time. I have one of the reissue models from Gibson USA and it oozes John Sykes all over. It's raw, edgy, and in your face. I love it

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I haven't tried the 500T, but I've got DF in an SG. I think what has been said about them is pretty accurate...high output, strong midrange, agressive, very dynamic, cleans up nicely, and actually splits very well indeed.

If you like that extra output, then it is an excellant all-around pup.

Actually, it was a test.

If you tested negative, the gave you a "kit" saying "never leave home without it". :smack:

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

The Dirty Fingers and 500T are different animals. The DF's are stadium crushing pups. John Sykes? Ok, maybe but much more like Aerosmith ala Live Bootleg if you want to get an idea of how they sound

The 500T is a great pup, well rounded but a bit bright in maple capped guitars. The original DF's, especially the Shaw versions are highly sought after by Les Paul and Explorer players. If you don't like raw and nasty, they are not for you. The new reissue DF's miss the mark, not sure why but they just don't have the bark and bite of the originals. Probably why the originals can cost you a bundle, especially the gold pole versions

There is a certain grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr that original DF's offer that just can't be put into words, you have to experience them and then you get that silly grin on your face which is priceless
