Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

the originals can cost you a bundle, especially the gold pole versions

There is a certain grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr that original DF's offer that just can't be put into words, you have to experience them and then you get that silly grin on your face which is priceless

I have an original DF, taken out from an Explorer from 1976, I think. I don't have any use for it as it's not my cup of tea sound-wise and today's amps have a lot of gain on tap, but I don't think you can find a better p'up to hit your amp's front HARD without losing clarity or articulation.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I've read that the Dirty Fingers was what James Hetfield used in his Gibson Explorer before Metallica became EMG advocates.

^i dont know how true that is.

I will say, that I own both pickups, and the 500t seems more middy while the dirty fingers is more rounded out. both are aggresive, but can clean up.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I wouldnt doubt James having one since he just used stock pickups until EMG came along but the 500T I heard takes a bit of work to get pinch harmonics with. Since you are thinking high output I assume is something to look into.

I have heard and read many times the hetfield used dirty fingers before EMG. Think kill'm all and ride the lightning. the best metallica IMO.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

There was a recent thread where someone found out in his early white explorer he had a custom wound Duncan based on a JB with all filister pole pieces. Like a hotter Alan Holdsworth pickup.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I dig the 500T in the bridge of my SG. Sounds very warm and mid-rangey and gets muddy when i want it to in the best way possible. Great for stoner stuff, thats for sure

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

My 335 had em and like a fool I let it get away from me. I loved the way the sounded and everyone I played with liked em too. If you want to sell em let me know. Like someone else said, they're hot, manly pickups. I dig em.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

I remember back in the day when I was browsing guitar brochures for Gibsons and this was 1985/1986 I saw Dirty Fingers and it just seemed nasty like someone that picks their a$$ and it's all brown, and hence the name "Dirty Fingers" Weird that I avoided that pickup for a while based on that. Still not bad of a pickup but the name still makes me gag.

Re: Gibson 500T/Dirty Fingers?

With all the great opinions on the 2 great pups, im assuming that the JB isnt in the same league.. right or wrong?
