Gibson 500T vs Duncan Custom SH-5 for bridge in SG.

Re: Gibson 500T vs Duncan Custom SH-5 for bridge in SG.

IME the SH-5 was brighter and more even across the spectrum. Had a bit more low thump on my guitars.

500T was a good all around rock pickup. Not as much top end. A bit stronger low mids in my guitars (SG and LP).

500T sounded like a loud 498T, maybe a little better, more even.

SH-5 sounded in between a loud '59 and a loud Pearly Gates.

Not a metal or ceramics guy, but of the handful of ceramic PU's I've tried, I like the 500T best. It has that gritty sound quality that a few Gibson HB's have.

+1 for being a louder, more even 498T. Of the two I actually like the 500T, though I don't care for the grit blueman describes. I think clarity suffers a little as a result and I generally prefer the SH-5 (of the two).

Re: Gibson 500T vs Duncan Custom SH-5 for bridge in SG.

I had the 496r/500t in my Les Paul 1960 Classics. Too hot for the classic rock and blues I do through my Mesa amps, but I did like the tones. Swapped for a set of Serhs in one Classic and Antiquitys in the other and couldn't be happier.

Hate the 490r/498t...the pickups don't work well together.

Don't know about the Custom 5. I wonder if it might be too scooped for an SG.

The idea of a Burstbucker 3 in an SG intrigues me....

The 498T/490R set is a baffling combination with the vast EQ differences between them, all the moreso since Gibson's put it in so many guitar models over the years. It's improved by putting an UOA5 in the bridge and an A5 in the neck.

When I joined here 11 years ago, the C5 (SH-14) was the top recommendation by members for a hot bridge PU in an SG. Once A8's became readily available, the C8 took the top spot.
