Gibson 57 classics vintage matched set

Does anyone have any info on these? I read a description of the two 57 classics that come in the set and they say Alnico III magnets are used. I thought 57s used Alnico II...

I wonder how they would compare to the regular set. These have roughcast A3's.

If you want the regular, go after them used. That's what I did. Saved a bunch that way. I love those pickups but they are overpriced, IMO.

I don't think A2's work well in '57's, A3's would probably be an improvement. The neck wouldn't be as dark, and the bridge would have a little better cut to it. But, you might like other mags better than A3's though. I put an A5 in neck '57, which is very good. In the bridge an UOA5, RC A4, or A8 would be my first choices.

I wonder how close they are to the A3 pickups used in the Randy Rhoads model. Looks like the same wire and resistance range.

I'm sorry to but in, But what does UO mean in front of pickups like UOA5?
Maybe there is a "best" thread you can point me too. Thank you.

anyone out there have set gibson the 57 vintage set? if so, do you like 'em? do they sound any better/different from the a2 models?

+ 1. If A2 didn't work well, A3 won't be any better... worse, that'll be more likely! :naughty:

OU = unoriented. Random 'grain' in the metal, as opposed to uniform direction in typical (oriented) A5's. Unoriented creates a more complex magnetic field; an UOA5 sounds like a cross between an A2 and A5. Nothing like the bright, scooped A5's we're used to.

All A2's, A3's, and A4's are unoriented. Almost all A5's are oriented.

I wouldn't write them off so fast. I think it depends on what they go in. In a Les Paul.... I don't care for them too much, but I have a stock set in my 359 & that guitar sounds incredibly good!

I found a much less expensive set on ebay that I'm going to try out in my Custom. I liked the '57's in there before so I'm interested to see how the A3's sound.
