I have an Epi G400 SG that I love and I like the sound of Gibson 57 pickups, but I want a 4 conductor set so I can do the Page switching. Which Duncan pickups sound similar??

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

Duncan 59 is what you seek. You can get them 4 conductor. Best Page pup period!

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

Agreed, it's tough to beat the Duncan 59B or 59N for a Les Paul type guitar...very versatile pickup which responds to touch and controls very well IMO...

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

yeah, classic 57s are my favorite Gibson pickup but i definitely like 59's better. If you want more gain in the bridge, try the Custom 5.

the only other thing i'd recommend would be a set of Seth Lovers but i don't think they come in four conductor...or the best pickups for Jimmy Page wiring, the P-Rails...that'll get you a sick variety of tones...

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

Make sure you get the '59s with the four-conductor option; I think you still have to special order it.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

59s are great, but I thought the '57 Classics were alnico 2????

if they are, then an APH might be closer

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

They are alnico 2, Curly. The '59 and '57 Classic are very different sound wise. About the only similarities is the vintage construction. The APH is closer, but not quite there.

The '57 Classics have the unique sound where there's a nice mix of A2 and A5 qualities, extended highs and lows with good midrange, something not often found in A2 pickups.

That being said, I'd be more inclined to go with a set of Pearly Gates. A2, good high end with some sizzle. The lows may not be as strong as the Classics but just about the rest will be in the ballpark.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

57s are A2 and IIRC unpotted. The Seths would be a proper equivalent.

People who like either of these particularly well probably react to the lack of potting more than the rest of the construction.

You can buy most Gibson pickups with 4-conductor wire. In most cases, the pickups are fit into guitars are 2-conductor and aftermarket pickups are 4-conductor. No idea whether that applies to the 57s.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

The '57 Classics are potted and are 2-conductor only, even aftermarket.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

I dig 57 Classics. They are cool pups. I also like BB 2/3's And of course, a screamin' 500T and Dirty Fingers.

I think a DiMarzio PAF is a slightly better PAF style than the 59, IMO. But 59's are great too. My basic PAF style prefs:
#1 PG
#2 DiMarzio PAF
#3 59's

But for Page - I'd go SD 59's.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

There are guys here that covert single conductor PU's to four conductor (particularly Gibsons) so they can do alternative wirings. Ask Super Rad Ska, he does it.

If you like what you have now, don't start throwing money at new PU's that you might not like as well.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

BTW, Super Rad Ska has apparently changed his name to Super Rad Stuff; my gues is that he's in the witness protection program and is in hiding. He's easy enough to find.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

I started to like my '57 Classic when I've put an A5 magnet and an A8 in my '57 Classic Plus... NOW they rock!

+1 on the re-wiring. Don't swap from something you love, if you can mod it easily

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

Do you have before and after sound samples??

No. Just an expensive guitar (Mayones Maestro) that was gathering dust because it just "didn't sound right" without being able to say exactly "why".

Now it gets played almost as often as my #1 (1980 MIJ Emperador 335 copy).

Are those REAL '57 Classic or the ones that came with the guitar?

You can mod those p'ups into 4-conductors, you know...? Just ask the guy that'll make the JP wiring; it's not that difficult.

Re: Gibson 57 vs. Duncan???

59's are great in an LP or SG. AC/DC-Cream-Zep.
