Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I really like this "thing", raw, rough and a tone of attitude. I can get one here at a local dealer for a good deal. Its setup with 11's and i just had enough time to play it unplugged on my lunch break, what a wickedly loud chimmimg sound!
A P90 in the neck!

Now, what are your guys opinions on it from a classic Lp point?
Cool take on a classic design?
Different but not my thing?
Rough unfinished piece of cr@p?

Does anyone here own one, any pros/cons after playing it for a while?

This could be an impulse buy i think!

If you like it go for it!
I love the humbucker bridge/P-90 neck concept, I wish they'd use it on some "special" LP standard......
I don't like the unfinished-ness of the rest of the guitar..........

To each his/her own though........

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I really like it. In principle. But I think the main switch not for pickup selection is a bogus idea. And I think for fiddling preparedness I would prefer two standard humbucker sized cavities.

If it is very loud when playing unamplified that might be a bad sign. A Les Paul should normally "keep" the energy (giving back as sustain) instead of radiating it into the air. Of course it can also be the base for a great sound, so YMMV.

Looks great, though. A "serious" guitar in lack of better words.

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

Well im off to plug this in to a Marshall and a Rivera Knucklehead......
May have pics after the weekend!

That's because there's very little wood in it. It's basically a hollow body.

Here's the closest thing they have to what you want:

I like that a little better than the BFG. They can keep that killswitch thing. Gibson's still not getting it right IMO. Wire it like a regular Les Paul, but with a humbucker bridge PU and P90 neck PU. Then I'll start to get interested.

What they have there is a $1,159.00 guitar that needs to be completely rewired.

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

Yup, that's it. I'll try to post a pic of an x-ray to one of them when I get home but I doubt I can find it again.

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I like the pickup combo, but I don't like the unfinished bit or the killswitch. The Other one's a lot better, but meh, I just put a bucker in my Warmoth Tele, with the P-90 in the neck and voila. BFG-Tele. Lots of people say they are great players, tho. If you've got a fancy for one, go for it!!

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I concidered them, but ended up going with the studio and eventually I'll drop a fat cat in the neck. Never was a fan of the bfg top, but if you dig it, go for it.

and I love this quote:
They call it the BFG because when you get home you realize you Bought F-ing Garbage!

i'll say this...no inlays, cool idea....p90/hum combo, cool idea...the rest 100% pure SUCK!

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I'm usually a big fan of any Les Paul, but not this one. Its really ugly IMO, and the controls just seem awkward to say the least. I like the pup combo idea, but I'd much rather add some new pups to a good looking studio. And if you're like most users here, you'll probably end up removing those stock pups anyways. And, like others have said, I'd probably want to re-wire the whole thing so it'd be like a standard LP.

So to be honest, there's nothing I like about the BFG at all. I'd much rather get a studio, and be that much closer to the real thing.

In addition, I liked Gibson's faded finishes, but the BFG seems to be taking the "faded" thing to the next level by making some really ugly finishes. Faded and reliced finishes seem to be in vogue now, but this one seems to be more "crappier" than normal. I guess worn, or beat up is in style now and little by little, they seems to be taking it to the next extreme. Frankly, I can't wait until this trend is over and Gibson goes back to offering some nice matched flame or quilt tops as standard.

The only thing going for this guitar IMO is the fact that its different than anything else out there right now. So if different is your thing then go for it.

I like that idea. Buy a real Les Paul, and install a Phat Cat! Sure, real P90s look cool, but that's a better solution IMO.

No wonder people have been saying chambered Les Pauls feel like toys

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

Does anyone know why they chamber them or do people just want to bash Gibson for not telling us that its chambered? I'm sure if they marketed it as a chambered body it would get good responses, but trying to hide it makes them look bad IMO even though I don't have anything against chambered bodies.

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I've never played one. As far as looks go, I'm not too down with the wooden knobs and the see thru truss rod cover. I do however like the idea/concept behind the whole thing.

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

I'm not entirely opposed to them, needs new knobs and a switch tip to look better in my book...

Re: Gibson BFG.... thoughts on this Lp

See through? Thought the point of criticism was that they didn't come with a TRC. LIke the non inlayed fretboard and the P90/HB setup but just about everything else I don't really care for.

The Studio version is a big improvement but could use a few mods also.
