Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

I've read numerous threads elsewhere (mostly LPF) about these guitars. One of the most argued issues is the pickups. Some claim to have been told they are off the shelf PGs, others claim they've been told they are a Custom Shop version that sound significantly different from the production models.

Anyone have an answer? Obviously Evan or Frank do, not sure if it's something they wish to discuss publicly... would love to know, though!

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

I can't for the life of me figure why the WOULDN'T be PG's.....subsequently, I'm Dooshun Guitars did something else.

Of course, the beauty is....anyone who would really know, can't afford it. Pure Gibson Evil Genious!

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

i don't think there's any questions that they're Duncans

i think the OP wants to know if they're production-line Duncans or custom shop Duncans.

i'm gona bet that Gibson didn't wana spring for the custom shop job but that's just cuz i know Gibson

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

The pickups are standard Pearly Gates. The covers were hand-distressed by MJ to achieve a certain "dinged" look.

(Glad I'm finally out of Aceman's sig).

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

makes me more excited to try the PG in my paul now! My guitar has a distressed player....

I thought being in Aceman's sig would be a badge of honor...?? Like a call from JJ.

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

Thanks for the info, Evan. I'm sure it threw more than a few corksniffers for a loop that an off the shelf set of production pups could make those guitars sound like that.

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

if you watch the rig run down on billy, his tech mentions tv jones and seymour duncan pups

Re: Gibson Billy Gibbons signature's pups

The pickups were done in the custom shop, but that's just because the cover aging MJ did was very detailed. But the recipe for the pickup was the same as the production floor pickup.

Some folks hear with their eyes.

Ah, yes. The politics of envy.

I'd call it "bragging rights".

The more you spend, the more you're allowed (by whom?)to brag 'bout.

These persons are jam-poopers, 'cause when they drop with their $ 6,000.00 Custom Shop or vintage instruments everybody just stops playing and start talking...

Did I say how much I DON'T like these persons? :banghead:

LMFAO. I once took my Chapman Stick to a jam evening. It just confused the fark out of everyone except for one drummer. He laid down a beat over which I could "Tony Levin-ise". Some other guitarists soloed over the top of the groove for four minutes. Thank you and good night. :D

Last time that I played a jam evening, I took my PRS SE Soapbar with the Lindy Fralins. Pre-owned, pre-distressed, 325GBP
