Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Customs

I can't get on the Gibson Custom/Historic site cos of software issues...

So I was wondering if any of the forum gurus' could answer me about the new Les Paul Customs which as I understand are now all made in the Custom shop...

I am up in the air about getting a Historic R8 or a Black Custom (and later "brian robertson-izing it...i.e. silver hardware, cream pg and rings like a standard).

My issue with the Reissues is the neck..I *like* pretty big (50s production is perfect), but I don't have big hands or long fingers and I'm just leery about putting out that much money for a huge friggin neck I'm really gonna need to take some time with to see if it's right for me...

so my questions re: the newer Custom Shop Customs are

1) Do they have the long neck tenon? (I'm talking the "standard" custom, not R7 Black Beauty or such)

2) What neck profile do they have? 60s standard? 50s standard? something else?

OK..so guess that means no long tenon, but the "studio" carve neck (59 round profile I think they call it at times)..which I'm OK with...

Thanks TGB....I just am not sure what to do about this neck thing.....

though I must say.....the thought of getting a R series dwindles a bit everytime I see this: :baby: :baby:

Yo bro..lol.

This past weekend I sat down with a LP Custom and played for who knows how long. I can tell you this about the neck, the sucker is fat, probably the 50's standard. The site says "rounded profile". I loved how it felt, and I have big hands and long fingers. That is why I mentioned in another thread that the Custom is the only Gibson LP I would be happy with. The tone? OMG, the tone. :32:

The neck joint I'm not sure about.

I'd take an LP Custom over a Historic any day.

Jeff, FWIW when I went LP shopping my goal was a fat neck LP. I played 3 different Customs and NONE of them had a Historic style neck...they were like the "50's" shape and size that you would find on a Standard but by no means as fat as a Historic. If you are looking for a tree trunk neck a 57, 58 or 59 are gonna be your options unless you want P-90's.

I really find that 50s production neck about ideal for me...chunky enough for chording but not so big I can't get around the fretboard...I've played a R6/R7/R8/R9 and the 59 was the best but it's STILL bigger than the production standard 50s...

That Hamer looks better all the time, I've been secretly eyeing that thing for months.....I know it's not a paula, but I LOVE Explorers (first Gibson was one) the QC is there, should have hella sustain with the Hamer neck joint and big mahogany body, some added brightness/mid complexity with the maple cap, has a pair of 59's already, and hell I just like being different (hence the purchase of the firebird ).

time for a new thread maybe....

I prefer the regular 50's/59 profile over all the others, regardless of regular prod. or Historic. LP Customs almost always have the 50's neck, but the 57 Reissue 2 and 3 pickup models are just a hair thinner, but feel great.

The black Custom with the beefy neck is the 68 Reissue (nickel hardware like James Hetfield's). Personally, I think the most desireable black Custom is the new Historic Custom....since it has a maple top underneath the paint. The 57's, like mine, are solid mahogany and have more buttery highs and strong mids. If I were you, I'd just keep my eye out for a used LP Custom from 89-2005. They looks so damn cool strapped on!

Thnks Joe for the info.

I had a new 88 custom I loved, and a mid 80s white one I didn't love so much (used and abused when I bought it). I think the neck profile on current customs would be much more to my liking..i'm surprised though that the R7 BB neck is bit smaller.

I'm gonna check some out along with that Hamer in the coming weeks.

Hey JeffB,

The current Custom from the Custom Shop (say that three times fast) does not have a long neck tenon, but it does have weight relief holes (like the regular USA Gibsons).
The neck size is not always consistent, but it is smaller than an R7 or R8. Very similiar to an R9 which makes it close to a "rounded profile".
If the necks on Classics are too thin, and an R8 is typically to large, you will probably like the necks on these.
