I imagine not, but I was thrown offguard when I got my new AMS cat where they are "closing out" gibson 1968 V's for $999. Im guessing its prolly just the 1968, but they dont appear any diff to me than Gibson vs have for years. ?? can someone clarify for me?? thanks

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

I looked on the Gibson website and couldn't find anything to say they're being discontinued. There used to be an area on their site for discontinued models, but I couldn't find it. Like you said, maybe it's just the 1968 model (or some baloney AMS is pulling to get the ball rolling sales-wise).

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

It sounds like they may just be clearing out old stock to make way for new stock.

If I could cherry pick them in person, I might just sell something in order to get one at that price.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

The ´68 Model V is the standard Flying V we´ve all seen x million times over teh years, the `59/Korina Reissue style is the other one that Gibson only does limited runs of.

I call AMS-BS or AMS clearing out stock, but not Gibson discontinuing them.

I figured the same on both points.. Just makes me wonder cuz of some of the shakeups in the industry lately.

simple. they're trying to create urgency. i guess its working for some.

Yep! made me think.. haha But, sadly, I cant afford a new one. besides Id be torn tween one of those or the trad pro v or whatever its called. (no pickguard)

I surely dont NEED a V, but I really enjoyed the faded one I had and Id love to have either a white or black one with a purple mirror pickguard...

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

Come on now. Did you honestly think Gibson would discontinue the Flying V? You've got to be kidding me. That's funny as hell.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

They're most definately clearing out the 2012 stuff to make room for 2013 stuff.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

yeah I heard that Fender will no longer be making amplifiers and that Ernie Ball has stopped their string line.

Strange times we're living in.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

2012 models being closed out everywhere. I am seriously gassing for both a black and white.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

no, i really didnt think they would discontinue the v over all. I guess I shoulda worded the question different.. what makes the 68 different and what is being changed?

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

I had my GC buddy call Gibson, and they did in fact tell him that they are discontinuing the V model. Personally I think this would be temporary, but Gibson does have a track record of bone headed moves.

Either way, I went ahead and bought a black one.

Re: Gibson discontinuing V's?

Technically, they discontinued the "Flying V" several years ago. The most recent version, was the Flying V Reissue, which was later renamed the '67 Flying V, which was renamed the V Factor X, which was renamed the V Factor. All of which were EXACTLY THE SAME GUITAR. Actually, they also renamed it AGAIN, as the '68 Flying V. :sigh:

Maybe they are coming out with a "new model", this year? (Which of course, will ALSO be exactly the same?)

This IS Gibson we're talking about, so, it DOES make sense... :34:
