Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

If you're thinking of active pups don't forget Duncan Blackouts

Considering it's a pretty big chunk of mahogany, you'd be safe having too mich high end to eq later. I would recommend a Distortion or an Invader, both nice and chunky.

Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

I've boiled it down to the SD Distortion and the Dimarzio D-activator.

I guess it's time to just pick one of them and try it out. There seem to be big followers of both when putting it into a mahogany guitar.

Of what I understand, the d activator is more like an active sounding PU, while the distortion is beast of its own.

Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

Are you buying new or used? I believe SD has a 30 day gaurantee that you can swap it for another pickup if it doesn't work...forum bros please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

The Distortion has more mids, the D-Activator has more attack and maybe a bit more low end, or maybe it seems that way because of the quieter mids.

Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

the 21 day exchange policy works as long as you buy from the Seymour Duncan co. in the US or if you buy from one of their authorized distribuitors on your country, if in doubt ask the shop you're buying duncans from

Re: Gibson Explorer - pickups for thrash and death

I ended up ordering the dactivator. Im gonna through it in next week. A friend of mine got a brand new Distortion I can trade it with - should I not like it.

Thanks for the input
