Re: Gibson fails to grasp creation of internet
I love my Gibsons, and the funny thing is, I barely paid dealer cost on them, on the used market. THAT'S what's been hurting Gibson. The bean counters there have realized that charging automobile prices for their guitars just doesn't fly with musicians.
It goes over great for the 'blues lawyers' who brag about their $7000 Limited Historics, but not any average Joe's out there.
I don't need to defend Gibson. The guitar tone speaks for itself. I have yet to buy a guitar that knocks them off their pedestal, and unfortunately, Gibson knows this. I still love other brands, and honestly, those OTHER brands are the only guitars I'd buy new. Gibson is quickly screwing themselves, and they don't have the brains to realize that their company is eventually gonna be seen as uncool. I hate to say it, but younger players are not going to support that company in their later years, when Gibson has been charging obscene prices and slapping their potential customers in the face.
As for a master plan.......I think the master plan is to make it impossible to get a decent price on their guitars, which they THINK will raise their mindshare in the same way as Mercedes and Ferrari. The used market hurts them, and the internet discounters hurt their bigger retailers. If thier plan doesn't work, an entire generation of players will despise them and other companys will get their spending dollars. Guys like me will continue to be bottom feeders to aquire Gibsons at dirt cheap prices. I'm sorry, but I won't ever pay more than $2000 for a guitar. The used market is just to big for me to bring myself to do that.
