Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

Re: Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

I just readjusted the pickup height and pole pieces and found a SWEET spot that actually sounds pretty good:cool2:.

Where is the best place online to get magnets?

Thanx for the link, anyone know what the Kohm's on 500t is?

An A8 wouldn't sound good in a 500T, I would think. It would be too dark. An A2 would sound good, as the smoothness of an A2 would even out with the ceramic side magnets being harsh and create a nice solid tone. An A5 may be bright but I would want to hear it myself before making a decision.

I just bought that pickup from a forum bro and I am trying out an A2,A3,A4, and an A5.

Was thinkin the custom 5 , had one in an Ibanez sz a while ago and its rocked...... the only thing I ddnt like about it was a bit mid scooped , and I got lost in the mix with the leads on 2 guitars unless I really cranked the boost and blew people backwards...lol

Custom 5 is what my V came with off from eBay. I have a blender mod on it so I can roll it back to a single coil if need be. Just gives it more versatility.

Who's swapped out magnets on the 500t ? What was the outcome....

Re: Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

The 500T wasn't the worst choice in my Explorer by far.

The C5 did not work, it killed the roaring mid, and neither did the Antiquities which didn't mix sweetness with roar (how could they?).

I sold it before extensive testing but I would estimate that the Duncan Custom would come out very nice for a more open sound than the 500T or the APH1b if you want an outright bright sucker.

Re: Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

I think Blueman has mentioned before that the A8 in a 500T was better than the stock ceramic. It warmed it up and the side ceramics kept it from becoming a wooly mess.

Re: Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

FWIW the 500T shares the same coils as the 498T and 490R just different magnets.

490R = Alnico 2
498T = Alnico 5
500T = Ceramic (+2 small ceramic magnets)

Great suggestions , anyone tried the dimarzio super distortion ?

If clarity and tightness is your thing and you want to go DMZ, Steve's Special all the way. Best pickup I've ever used in the bridge ever. I used it to tighten and clean up my Les Paul, now it goes into all of my guitars especially since they are all Les Paul esque as far as tone goes.

I used a lot of pickups and swapped a lot of mags trying to find a solid combo. The SS stays tight and clear always even if I crank the mids. Never muddy. Only thing I did to it was swap out the ceramic for an A8 just to round it out a tad. It's not harsh by any means I just like really tight punchy rhythms and a buttery smooth lead tone. The A8 allowed me to keep the same basic rhythm tone but made it easier to get that lead tone I desired.

Re: Gibson flying V... bets PU for rock/classic/hard

everyone is probably gunna say im dumb, but SD blackouts sound great for regular and hard rock. They are more dynamic then most actives, they dont sound like just a metal pickup ,but rather just a perfectly eq'd pickup. It pretty much does whatever I wanted them to. My bro used them in a blues competition and they worked out well for him. No Hollow or too compressed sounds with them at all.
