Gibson guitars through Fender amps

I did notice that there weren't as many players using a Gibson with a Fender amp. While Strats are being used with Marshalls and Fenders alike most Gibson Les Paul players stick with their Marshall (not including jazz guitarists with big Gibson jazz boxes).
I had a few chances to play a Les Paul through Fender amps. I love the result.
So my question is - what famous players used Les Pauls, SG's, Flying V's, etc... through Fender amps?

Well, I am pretty sure about Chuck Berry and BB King with their ES-335 guitars...

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Derek Trucks, Eric Clapton (recently used a Les Paul through his Tweed Twins), The Lenny Kravitz band (blackface stacks with 59 LP Standards and 57 LP Customs - some of the best live tone I've heard), I would guess Billy Gibbons in the chance that he would ever use a Les Paul... And of course ME!

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Just about every ES-335 user? B.B. King for a while (before he switched to those god awful Lab series amps).

Gibson through a Fender amp is *the* blues sound in my opinion.

Ted Nugent in the 70's

Mike Bloomfield

Carlos Santana at Woodstock

The amp Santa used at Woodstock was actually the first Mesa Boogie ever made. I think it was a Fender Champ that Mesa heavily modified for high gain, gutted for a more reliable circuit board, etc.... it was basically a Mesa Boogie Mark I inside a Fender Champ cabinet

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

I thought the 1st Boogie came later than Woodstock. Wasn't he playing a Bandmaster or something?

Oh, yeah... and Robbie Kreiger

Kent Henry (Blues Image, Steppenwolf) got an incredible tone using his old 335 through a brown Tolex Concert Amp. He also was one of the first local players using an old sunburst LP back then, but really dialed in his tone when he switched to the 335. I remember switching out his standard 10" Fender speakers for JBL's when I worked at the old Valley Sound in LA in the early '70's. That amp really was something special.... the sweet sustain of the amp and the bite of the JBL's was a great combination.

Anybody know what Kent is up to these days?

Carlos used the first Mesa in 1970 on the Abraxas album. They first came in 60 and 100 watt combos so I doubt the start was a Fender Champ. That's too small a chasis for what that amp had. He still has and uses a 1972 MkI combo with a 417 Altec 12" speaker.

I saw Neal Schon in the mid-90's playing his LP Custom through 2 Twins. He was driving them with a Boss Blues Driver. Talk about a sweet tone. I think one of them was hooked up to a Marshall 4x12 he had sitting there.

When did Clapton use a Les Paul thru the Tweed Twins Recently?

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

His most recent tour I saw a video of him using a Les Paul through his main amp rig of the Tweed Twins. I dont remember the exact video or concert though...Maybe someone else can chime in.

Clapton with a Les Paul recently? I'd like to hear that one! I just saw Clapton two weeks ago in LA and he exclusively used Strats through the same setup he used in the '05 Cream reunion concerts - 2 re-issue Twin Amps & Leslie cabinet. With my binoculars I could see his rack of guitars off-stage, 4 or 5 Strats (black ones and white ones) and one acoustic. No Les Paul in sight.

Trucks had the SG and two black-face Super Reverbs. Bramhall used Tele's, Strats, & a Les Paul. I couldn't focus in on the amps, but he normally has a couple of Marshall heads stacked on a 4x12 cabinet.
