Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

OK, I have to say this...the first Boogie was a modded Princeton Revern not a Champ...Randy Smith modded loads of old Princetone Reverbs as well as a few Vibrolux Reverbs and one or 2 Champs but the first one (that was at Woodstock being used by the guitar for Country Joe and the Fish) was in fact a modded Princeton Reverb however it was not "gutted" and it was not done to make the amp more "reliable". It was done simply to mess with the amps owner (the guitar player for Country Joe) it had Bassman Transformers, a 12 inch EV and a master volume added as well as the now famed "Boogie lead drive stage".

Now, on to the Gibson guitar through fender amps...it's a LONG list:

-BB King
-Albert King
-Gatemouth Brown
-Clapton
-Mike Bloomfield
-Billy Gibbons
-Peter Green
-Danny Kirwin
-Rich Robinson

There are loads more...a Gibson guitar into a narrow panel tweed is a beautiful thing and buckers into a BF ain't bad either!

Steve Howe of Yes. Don't know what he uses now, but for years he played his ES-175 thru a Twin Reverb and a Dual Showman cabinet. Saw them live for the "Fragile" "Close To The Edge" "Tales From Togographic Oceans" and the "Relayer" tours and that's what he used for all of those tours.

Got some great tones with it all.

I hate you. Oh god, the pain. :crying:

I love my Les Paul into my Champ. Great, great sound.

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Clapton with a Les Paul recently? I'd like to hear that one! I just saw Clapton two weeks ago in LA and he exclusively used Strats through the same setup he used in the '05 Cream reunion concerts - 2 re-issue Twin Amps & Leslie cabinet. With my binoculars I could see his rack of guitars off-stage, 4 or 5 Strats (black ones and white ones) and one acoustic. No Les Paul in sight.

Prior to the Cream reunion he did a tour with a few Gibsons. I think it might of been the tour for "From the Cradle" but I could be wrong. I have a bootleg of him at the Filmore in SF and you can hear him change from the Strats to an ES-335. It's just such a startlingly different in sound between the two that it totally floored me the first time I heard it.

I read when randy rhoads first tried out for Ozzy he just used his les paul custom and a tiny fender practice amp and played a few riffs and ozzy wanted him on the spot

Maybe Randy should have stuck with this combo.

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

I regularly play Gibsons through Fenders, and have been doing it for years.

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Didn't Albert King use his Gibson Flying V with some type of Fender Twin....

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

Don't forget that crazy cat Greg Allen who plays a Les Paul through a Vibrolux Reverb and Bandmaster Reverb.

I'm pretty sure Albert's main rig was a V into solisd state Acoustic amps.

About the only time I like a non-tweed twin is when used with a Paul, 335 or SG.

Re: Gibson guitars through Fender amps

I just found an old clip of Clapton playing a '60's 335 at one of the Hyde Park concerts. He was covering Freddy King's "Have you Ever Loved a Woman" and really did the song justice by using that guitar. His tone was superb.

EC - please go back to using Gibsons!!
