Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

FWIW, the best Les Paul I ever bought was a 1973 Deluxe cherry sunburst off eBay that had a headstock repair. That was about eight years ago, and I got it for around $850 routed for a humbucker in the bridge. I love the minihumbucker neck pickups, so the guitar was a dream for me. I just sold it because we needed the money, and I sold it to the drummer in my band who promised to sell it back to me when and if I get the money to do so. Again, best Gibson Les Paul out of the four I've owned in my life.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Sorry but this is a fact. Gibson guitars are prone to head break. This isn't a myth but a fact. Rooted in fact. Anyone who knows anything about Guitar design knows that the sharp angle and large truss rod cavity make for a very weak transition. It is a real genuine problem. I know Gibson lovers like to flame people who point this out but I hate to see people getting ripped off and if you are looking into buying a Gibson from e-bay and dodgy broken head is a real danger.

I'm guessing the reason there are so many Gibson fans on here is that most people get fecked off with them flaming every time someone says something that goes against the gospel of Gibson.

#1 It is a general design weakness; However, it is only relevant if you DROP the guitar. And as a serious neck bender, it is by no means weak. Les Pauls in general are built like brick ****houses.

#2 The majority on ebay have not had neck breaks. I would guess only a very small minority have in fact experienced that and that the vast majority of those are EXPLICITLY stated as having had such repairs. It's called fraud if you don't mention that.

At this point I feel obliged to join in. You are a retard and should listen more and talk less.

Look I have seen literally hundreds of Gibsons with head damage.
No you haven't. The only way you've seen hundreds of Gibsons with head damage is if you did a search for pictures online.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Go on any guitar store site and the majority of the used Gibsons will have "Some head damage" "Good neck repair"

It's like he's freaking saying that everyone who sells a Gibson has dropped theirs! LOL WUT

No way. "The majority" is a very strong phrase and it just doesn't apply here.
I just looked at all the used Les Paul Studios on musicians friend. Out of 7, NONE of them had a headstock repair.

Guys, don't try to use logic. He'll just get pissed off and call you a troll.

I make a point of not participating in personal attacks, but.... +1.

It's time. It's like the episode of Little House on the Prairie where the kids finally gang up on the school bully and stomp a mudhole in his ass. I've had it with his crap, and it's time for him to lay off or move on.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Be careful a good deal Les Paul on the bay is almost certainly had a head break.

If you find a very good deal on a used Gibson like with any really good deal on e-bay you smell a rat. With a Gibson 99 times out of 100 that smell is coming from a head break injury.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

And that picture of Les Paul proves my point. Look at the guitar on Les' lap it has a shallow angle and a voulte. Les knew the head joint was weak so he designed a better one.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

This is stupid. You are acting like a child. Let it go. There is irrefutable evidence that most Gibsons DON'T have headstock repairs.

Ex. 1:

THEY DON'T.

You can't say the grass is purple 3 times and have that make it so. I'm an astronaut. I'm an astronaut. I'm an astronaut.

Believe me yet?

The headstock might be more shallow, but it's hard to judge from the angle of the photo. I don't see a volute, though. Regardless, the photo does not prove your assertions about the prevalence of broken headstocks on Gibsons. I'm still waiting for the headstock on my V to break. I've been "looking" at it in all kinds of funny ways, in addition to playing and enjoying it, and the headstock is still in the same place it was when I bought it six years ago. I appreciate your noble efforts to undermine that enjoyment -- I really do -- but you just haven't delivered yet.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

The volute - now you are treading in my waters. As an aficianado of all things Norlin, let me tell you about the volute sonny.

Yes - it was added to increase the strength of the neck in that particulalr spot. But here is what really happens:

Instead of the neck breaking below the nut, in the actual neck, where it can be repaired extremely well (see modern manufacturers who glue the appropriate stock on to a generic neck), the necks now break at the headstock. A break in the middle of the headstock is extremely difficult to repair with any sense of stability. Simply too little wood and space to deal with, plus extreme tension between the pegs and the nut. Again, not that they break in anything but rare instances in the first place...

And I bend my neck in ways that are reminiscent of Steve Stevens and make Jake E Lee look like a jazz player doing a subtle vibrato.

You know - you can learn a lot here, if you want to...

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I've owned a Gibson since 1968.... an SG standard. The headstock has NEVER been broken, I also own 2 Les Pauls & a 335. same thing..... never been broken. I agree with Aceman if you drop it there is a chance it could break, but I have never dropped any of my guitars.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I would suggest that you could break any guitar if you drop it.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Randy Rhoads pushed on his headstock on his LP so much he had to have the neck reset a few times. I don't recall anything about a broken headstock though. They must not be that weak.

Yeah, I recall hearing a concert where it almost sounds like he has a whammy bar on his LP. I was freaking out but the guitar kept playing just fine.
