Gibson Les Paul Studio or Standard? Any Other LP Recommendations?

I have decided to go with a Gibson Les Paul for my next guitar. I was originally going to buy parts and build another custom strat but the Ebay transaction for the rare body I wanted to use went sour. In short, the seller I bought the Fender American Deluxe Candy Tangerine Body from decribed the body to be in MINT/Flawless condition, but once I got it I found that there were numerous scratches on it and it was NEAR MINT in condition at most. So I sent the body back to the seller and got a refund because it was totally misrepresented. During the time I waited for my refund, I pondered other guitar choices and decided I would rather get a Gibson Les Paul since I already own a strat. So just for something different a Gibson Les Paul is what I am saving for. I would prefer to buy a Brand New 2004 or 2005 model. I was thinking along the lines of a Gibson Les Paul Studio or Standard? I am willing and prepared to drop about $1,500.00 on one (possibly a little more if needed). Anyone have any info or thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Studios or Standards? Any other LP recommendations? :32:

I think in the long run you will be more happy with a les paul standard. I know i would be over a studio.

If you are looking for a USA gibson, you could try out Music Machine www.guitarsale.com. They are having a clearance sale and you may be able to get one for 65-75% of retail. Make an offer. They have the high dollar custom shop guitars and the USA ones also. I was there the other day and they had a really nice selection I am sure you can find something in the 1200-1500 range. Ask for Kramer, he is pretty cool.

I am VERY interested in this same issue. I like the idea of the Studio, but I'm not so sure about the finishes. But is it worth $600 more for a standard?

I have a studio, and I love it as much as my R9. I have put seth lovers in it and hoveland caps. it is a work horse. When I want a humbucker sound I will usually grap it. I havn't had the R9 for long so I can't really give a good comparison yet. i do like the old style bridge though over the nashville.

If you look on the USA gibson section they have standard premium plus with 60's neck. they don't have pics up yet, but i think the premium and plus models have fancier tops.

I really like my Studio, too. I hashed and rehashed the issue of Studio vs. Standard/Classic in my head for a long time before finally going for a Studio. Mine plays and sounds as good as any other Pauly in my opinion. But this subject is constantly being debated. Play both and see what you think. If you can deal without the binding the Studio is a great buy, and they can be bought used in mint cond. for around the $600-$650 range.

keep saving, they have a HUGE inventory. I would imagine over 150 les pauls alone. Maybe 200. I have a feeling there "sale" will be going on for awhile. Keep saving. And stay focused. Keep your eye on the ball.

I've got a Heritage version of a L.P. on order, and I expect this guitar to be one fine instrument. And for $1500, you could pretty much have your pick of options, right down to pups, hardware, binding, inlay, etc. But if you're a dyed-in-the-wool Gibson person, you'll probably fancy yourself a Gibby.

is that the ONLY diff with the Studi and Standard?
If so then I think i've found the next geetar i'm gonna purchase, I was up in store today and played that Tokai again, Freakin' sweet guitar and what a great feel, It's definitly different to the strat feel I'm used to also but in a good way...

I like the Studios, just because I like basic solid colors. I have an ESP EC-1000 that I love, awesome guitar, but if you're really going for the Gibson feel/sound, go with a studio. OR look at Edwards LP's on ebay, they are phenomenal. www.guitarsjapan.com has some beautiful ones too. Take your time, there's an overabundance of good guitars out there.

BIG TIME! I didn't care for the LP Studio I recently worked on very much at all. Go for a Standard...that's a professional instrument. And also much easier to work on, replace pots, switches, etc. Lew

How is a Standard MUCH easier to work on then a Studio??? The Studio is virtually the same guitar without the binding. As a matter of fact, from 1990 -94, Studios came with an ebony fingerboard, which is viewed as superior by many, and are also on LP Custom's.

The Studio I worked on required long shaft pots and the everything is mounted to a steel plate. You can't replace just one pot without removing all four knobs, and all four pots and the whole assembly.

I have 2 LP Studios, one from 1990, and one from 1995, that require the exact same pots, toggle switches, etc as a Standard, and no steel plate. However, there are the years of 1998-2001, where the Studios were thinner than the Standards, which I think the Studios were definately inferior to the Standard.

+1 The only diference (guessing your changing pickups)is the neck profile. The classic has the thin, slim taper and the standard has an option for that too, it also has the 50's neck. Thats just prefrence. I generally like a reasonably sized neck, the neck on my classic isn't bad. I've tried necks that I liked better, they were just a tad thicker, I like that because it kinda fills out the curve of your hand better. I'm happy with mine now but I might trade it in for one of those new faded standards if I like the feel. Maybe you should look into those as well

It's hard to beat a Custom. But Standards are close.
