Gibson Les Paul Veneer Tops?

Re: Gibson Les Paul Veneer Tops?

I talked with a friend that said they used a veneer on their sub $2k guitars like the Les Paul Traditional and solid maple on Standards. I can't find anything about this on the net either.

The Traditionals with the AAA tops are over 2k. I just did a pickup swap on my 2011 and it is indeed a solid maple cap.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Veneer Tops?

How the **** can you have a veneer on a carved top? It would have to be might thick :nana:

I think it's a very thin, kinda like a plastic sheeting with the flame on it. Fender used to do it and called it "fotoflame" I think.

That stuff was more like a film. Smelled like hell when I heated it up and pulled it off my MIJ strat.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Veneer Tops?

Veneers of all gorgeous woods & the correct low water content glue (called veneer glue!), are freely available.
After laying the veneer & glue on a sanded, routed body, it's then placed in a plastic bag with a vacuum cleaner attachment on it! Air is sucked out, plastic squashes veneer onto body. Done deal a few days later. Do Gibson do it on top of correctly selected body wood that is laminated together from smaller sections... hmmm... is profit important to owners & shareholders... Oh dear I'm such a believer in vintage mojo, it makes me play better! But if it looks the part, sounds amazing, cost me only '$ whatever', then it's got all the mojo needed to inspire anyone

Re: Gibson Les Paul Veneer Tops?

I've never seen a veneered top on a Gibson LP. God knows someone somewhere probably has one but I would doubt it's legitimacy.
