Gibson magnets shorter?

Anyone else notice the A5 mags out of Gibson pups (late model) are shorter than Duncans, or the aftermarket pieces? They're 2.325" long, vs. 2.500" on the Duncans.

Anyone compare the sound differences, if any? Might be another option for tweaking an individual guitar...

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

The (used) Gibson PU's I've gotten have standard-sized magnets. Maybe it's a recent thing.

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

Stock Gibson mags are shorter than 50's PAF/P90 magnets since the early 60's. SD and other makers use full length M55 to replicate the 50's originals.

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

that's interesting to know, i though most american pickup magnets were the standard 2.5" in length with asian pickup magnets being the only ones different(they're cast into this ugly block-ish shape that barely fits in my cases)

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

That's one of the bigger differences between 40's to 50's and 60's Gibson pickups (as well as standardizing to A5)...maybe the wire color wasn't so important after all.

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

Less magnetic material would probably mean a smaller (perhaps weaker?) magnetic field. That definately affects the sound of a pickup.

Re: Gibson magnets shorter?

It's the length- see the numbers in my 1st post.

It's not just newer pups, I checked a 498T from the mid 90s and it was the same shorter length. I'm sure it must make some difference in tone, everything else does. Just curious if anybody else had compared them, tonally.

I took apart a 498t just last night so I went to check...you're right. They are shorter.

Smaller magnet = less output.
