Gibson pickup authenticity verification

2 big words in one title, whoa!

eh,

okay my friend has an epiphone semi-hollow body he got used, pretty nice guitar. Guy told him he put in mid '70's gibson pickups from a Les Paul. The tone sounds pretty accurate. I did a setup on his guitar last night and under the neck pickup it says Gibson USA, etched/stamped in. That one's all good. Under the bridge pickup nothing is stamped but there is a black sticker that says "patent applied for". Okay it's a PAF type pickup, BUT is it an Epiphone regular deal or is this a genuine gibson pup?

Re: Gibson pickup authenticity verification

If it says "Patent Applied For," then it's a pre-62 pickup. If this is the case, then you have quite a little treasure that's probably worth more than the guitar itself. If that pickup was from the mid 70's, then it should say "Patent No."

Actually, that's pretty good advice. Either that, or put the pup in a safe deposit box and let it appreciate.

Don't the '57 classics come with that sitcker? That pickup looks like it's in too good of condition to be 40 years old.

very well could be, I have no idea. That's why I posted it here. I wasn't even sure if it was genuine gibson at first.

Re: Gibson pickup authenticity verification

I don't believe it's a PAF. The sticker is wrong...letters are too close together, just as they are on a classic '57. It could be a Classic '57, or something else that's had a sticker put on it by someone.

how would be a good way to get it appraised/identified, Gibson?

Re: Gibson pickup authenticity verification

I have 2 sets of 57 Classics here at the house and that pickups baseplate, sticker and screws are identicle to mine.

It's definately Gibson but I don't believe it is the $1500 model. It looks too simular to the 57s here at the house and it appears a bit too clean.
