Gibson pot plate. Hinderance on tone?

Does the metal plate where the pots and the toggle hook up really need to be there? My friend says it is a hinderance on tone and will sound better if you take the plate out and re-wire properly.

It's an installation pain in the butt, howver, I can't imagine any effect on tone.

Wouldnt the direct hook up of the toggle get rid of about 4 or 5 inches of wire and we all know the shortest wire possible is best at least for cable length.
