Hello,
I have a pair of Duncan pups. One is a Custom 5 and the other is a 59. What I need to know is this; Will Genuine Gibson Pup covers fit on the Duncans exactly?

Thanks.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

Gibson neck pickup covers will fit standard spaced Duncans.

You didn't specify if your Duncans are standard or trem spaced.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

I believe they are standard? I bought a Gibson 1998 flying V limited edition and the pups were already on the guitar. The Custom 5 is in the bridge position and the 59 is at the neck. It has the blender modification done to it.

I have some cool old Gibson pup covers that I want to install, but do not want to mess with it if they will not fit exactly.

Thanks much.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

it depends on what type of gibson pickup. classic 57(+) and burstbucker covers will fit a standard spaced duncan. those with prefixes(490R, 500T, etc) have different spacings.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

We can't rightly say if we don't know what model Gibby pickups the covers are for.

Hold both covers over the Duncan pole pieces to see if they align with the cover holes. If the do you're good to go. If not, it'll be obvious.

I've used Gibby 57 classic covers on standard spaced Duncans. A cover off a 498T bridge will not fit over a standard spaced Duncan.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

Gibson neck-spaced covers will fit any standard-spaced humbucker. Their bridge-spaced covers will fit any trem-spaced bucker.

The end.

Except Dimarzios. Nothing seems to fit those.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

Zhang, not too sure if the Gibson bridge covers will fit SD Trem-spaced pickups. Gibson spacing is 2" and SD Trem-spacing is 2 1/16". I haven't tried it myself and maybe there is enough leeway to squeeze onto a Trembucker.

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

Let me clarify. The pup covers I have are from an early 70's les paul. It has the word "Gibson" embossed into both of them. I think they look really cool on any Gibson guitar. I have them on my 77 Standard and want then on my 98 LE V.

I am really appreciating the feedback...especially Zhangliqun who is giving me a some hope. Only thing I do not understand. What is the difference between a bridge pup and a trem-spaced pup? I am really ignorant on this one.

Some of you probably are thinking...why doesn't this guy just try it DUH! Well...I went through this once before and found the not all pup Hum-b covers fit all Hum-b pups. It is a real drag to start into a project and then find the mis-fit. Then having to resolder and put it all back together again...ticked off :yell:

Poorman,
One of my recent questions in my last post was - What is the difference between a bridge pup and a trem-spaced pup? I am really ignorant on this one.:smack: :)

Re: Gibson PUP Covers

Spacing... It's all about spacing... Not all bridge pickups are trem-spaced, but all tremspaced pickups are bridge pickups (ok nobody tell me they use a trem-spaced bridge pickup in the neck position). Hopefully that is clear enough.

A bridge pickup is simply a pickup designated for the bridge position of the guitar. They come in both standard spaced (50mm) and tremspaced (53mm). Most Gibson style guitars require standard spaced pickups whereas most Fenders require tremspaced to compensate for wider string spacing.

I don't personally have a V, but I imagine you need a SH-14 and SH-1 (that's the standard spaced model).

Here's Duncan's definition of a trembucker.

If the pickups are already in the guitar and the strings are aligned over the pole pieces, I wouldn't get too hung up on the whole spacing thing. Just remove the strings from the guitar and hold the covers upsidedown over the pickups to see if the adjustable polepieces fit through the covers holes.

Are you installing the covers yourself?

Poorman,
Yes Sir...the king of touch and go soldering! I have successfully installed pups in my LP Standard. Then later switched the covers on that.
Sometimes I try to solder and it looks like dog doo. I probably need a better soldering iron...

Thanks for your help man!
:)
