Gibson Pup?

Hiya guys,
Can anyone identify this Gibson Pup?
It was on a CSL ES 335 that I got second hand in the early 80's. I'm pretty sure it wasn't installed as an original, but someone upgraded it.
I'm trying to find the model name/number or something? From what I've managed to find so far it dates probably from the early 60's to early 70's. The Pat num is 2,737,842.
There's a reading of about 7.4k

Also, got any idea what it might be worth????? smile3

1972 Stickered T-Top. They only came with the embossed cover in that year, with a few before and maybe a few after. Mostly 1972 though.

Worth? Nothing to me. I, like many other people hate the cover.

Someone with a 1972 LP or SG might find it useful for a restore.

Yup, T-top. I dont think they are worth all that much, unless you find someone who is restoring an older gibson that wants a T-top like DonP said.

It may sound ok in the neck position... if you change the magnet to an A4 or an A5 in a thin-sounding guitar.

I've never cared for those at all. They sound like snails with terminal cancer, specially in the bridge position.

Those were the reason Di Marzio got rich selling his p'ups.

Yep. Regular production line Gibson HB with the short-lived, unsightly embossed cover.

Actually, I would be more interested in seeing a few pics of the CSL guitar. Not seen one in years. If your camera has a filter holder around the lens, try a rose tinted one. :)

Definitely T-top. T-tops are hit or miss in my experience.

I love the T-top in my 79LP. I hated the bridge. But that could have kust been that particulalr pup.

Those covers might be worth more separately than the pup plus cover (to someone who digs them....)

I would keep it too.

I have a pair of 7.6K T-Tops in my 77 Custom and it rocks!

But it doesn't do Metal too well...

I'd keep it if I could, but what with the old cash flow situation at the mo!!!!

Anyway, how long would i keep it for???? After all, can't collect things for ever in case they go up in price------------my sheds and loft are testiment to that:laugh:

I live in a two bedroom, ground floor flat. I used to dream of getting an attic to fill with clutter. Try telling that to the youth of today. They won't believe you.

Schenker did some good work with a T Top, a wah, and a Marshall back in the day. Me, I'd be tempted to try it.

Yeah I just gonna say, any huge Schenker far will go ape sh!t over a T-top. I jam with this one dude hes like 47 I think. He spent like 5 years buying and selling T-tops until he finally found one he liked for his Gibson Flying V. I've played that V in my rig before and it is definitely not my pickup but I'm also not a huge Schenker guy. My style and tone preferences are mostly influenced by Jerry Cantrell and Slash. It's just madness that he would spend 5 years looking for the right T-top but I'm sure he isn't the only one doing that.

Sell the covers separately from the pups.

check fleabay for t-top prices. artificially high IMO like all things 70's

Haven't you seen that show "Horders - Buried Alive!"

I'll have to try some UFO or MSG with my 77 Custom I guess. I'm curious if the T-Top can do it.

A two bedroom flat??? You're lucky!!!! 10 of us lived in the coal bunker, and we only had something to eat once a week when the coalman delivered.
But try telling THAT to the youth of today, they wouldn't believe you.:1:

Yup- some of the most classic metal there is was recorded with T-tops (and Super Distortions for that matter)

Michael Schenker (his original V, and the small block later model)
Rudy Schenker (rhythm on "Can't get enough"-baddest t-top tone EVAR)
Mathias Jabs
Adrian Smith (his cherry SG)
Dave Murray (had some T-tops in one of his strats around time of 1st 2 albums)
Glen Tipton (his black SG special modded to a Standard)
K.K. Downing (both Vs)

thats just off the top of my head. EDIT- oh yeah- Randy's white LPC too.

That said, I think in most cases, it's stellar examples of the total instrument there- great wood, and a "good" set of T-tops-which as mentioned could run you a fortune trying to find. My experience with them is mixed- usually neck is better than bridge, but once in awhile you get the right piece of wood, and the bridge sounds fantastic too. They sound ALOT better in an all mahogany guitar than they do in a Les Paul.

Skatterbrane pups (IIRC) is making a T-Top/Shaw clone these days- clips I've heard are fantabulous-def geared more towards the Shaw side than the thinner early 70s T-top tone. I'm thinking about having having a pair wound for my new axe.
