Gibson RD Standard

Has anyone else got an RD? I think they're tremendously underrated guitars. I've had mine for almost 20 years. It sounds 'hotter' than my Les Paul Std and also tighter, no doubt thanks to the Fender scale length. Lovely neck and action too. Obviously this isn't the model with the Moog electronics!

I'm hoping there's a RD Appreciation Society out there somewhere.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

The Bass' are ergonomic disasters. I had an RD all maple Bass, but it sounded awesome-very bright and snappy. As for the guitars, sadly they arent underrated enuf anymore. They fetch good prices these days cause they are great guitars. All mahogany.
One thing though is if you get the one with the moog electronices ( RD Artist i think)they suck.

EDIT- I found out all RD's(Custom, Std and artist) are maple. The reish would probably turn out to be the best sounding one of the bunch. I'd like to get my hands on a 70's RD Std. with vintage PAf's though.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Sorry I was never a fan. Way too heavy- Back in the day they were "leftover" guitars. The stuff that's left on the wall after all the Norlin Deluxes, CBS Teles and Teiscos were sold- even after getting knocked down to $300.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

I had an all maple (maple neck, body, fingerboard) Artist for a short while...weighted a ton, terrble neck, crap pickups, not really very playable...it looked cool and the active pickups were a cool idea but in general it was just a pretty bad guitar. I wanted to like them because they looked cool and different but like the Golden Boy said they were leftover guitars when they were new and simply because they are old they are bringing crazy money and are being talked about as vintage...

Re: Gibson RD Standard

I had a guitar teacher that had one. That was back in the late 70's / early 80's. To this day I've always wanted one.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Nice guitar. Best one of the bunch. Got the old PAF's in it. Should sound fantastic and play great.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

I should probably apologize for my post.

I'm really glad you've got a guitar you've been able to bond with- I apologize if my post implied otherwise.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Never been a fan honestly but I respect your appreciation for a guitar thats a little different!

I've edited the original quote to follow my thougths... It was in 1980. I sold it after six months, I just couldn't play the darned thing... very shrill tone with the brifge p'up, mud city in the neck, the electronics just made the bad worse.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

I think they're the coolest freaking looking guitars ever, I want one of the new ones, but I'd sand down the neck...50s does not agree with me

Re: Gibson RD Standard

Cool body shape but the headstock and neck look like they don't match. I remember seeing some others made by different makers with different necks that looked (and probably sounded) better but can't recall what they were.

Despite the up and down comments I'd definitely want to try one if ever I got the chance.

Re: Gibson RD Standard

I think the RD (especailly the one with the fancy electronics) was a misguided knee-jerk reaction to the initial success B.C. Rich's original Eagle & Mockingbird. Take a desire for more knobs & switches, and a new & different shape, and run it through Norlin's product development department, and you get something truly... um... unique.

You sure you're not talking about the Moderne?
