Gibson re-releases Trini-Lopez model?

I remember reading in a Guitar World article right around the time the Foo Figthers' One by One came out Dave Grohl was really digging on a red Gibson Trini Lopez model and wished they still made them.

This is what it looks like:

and the the Gibson Vegas Standard, while not exactly the same, looks pretty damn similar:

I was looking through Gibson's site and I thought the comparison was interesting...

lol @ Gibson copying someone else's design...
yeah, whatever, those guitars look pretty snazzy though. I love offset bodies!

Re: Gibson re-releases Trini-Lopez model?

Which trini Lopez Model are they reissueing? Hopefully not the semi-hollow (Standard) model. Cause that was basically just a 335 anyways, so reissueing an ugly version of a guitar they already make is Just retarded. I mean I know gibson loves to make bad bussiness decisions, but com'on. Even reissueing the fully hollow (trini Lopez Deluxe) body model is a bad idea. If they're gonna rerelease sumthing, They might as well just rerelease Either of the Barney Kessel models, considering thats What the trini Lopez (deluxe) model was actually Based on originally anyways. And the Barney Kessels Are deffinately Less ugly and will more likely appeal to a Much larger audiance than A fugly Guitar with Diamond shaped "f" holes.

How can they copy something that was first manufactured by them between 1964 and 1971?
BEcause it wasn't desgined by them. By quickly skimming that page, it looks like Trini-Lopez was the man who desgned and must've discontinued it, so now they're basically, re-using his design, but with a different name.

is it just me or does that look like a BC Rich version of a 335

It was a Gibson guitar "designed in conjucntion with" Trini Lopez, manufactured in the Gibson factory with Gibson parts. Sort of like how the Les Paul was "designed in conjunction with" Les Paul... I'm sure Trini had input into the design, just as Johnny A, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel and Johnny Smith had into their signatures, but they were throroughly Gibson designs.
