Gibson SG Pickup combination P94/sd59

Hi guys,
I' ve got a question about the combination of two pickups.
I've replaced the stock pickups of Gibson SG special (490r & t) with a pair of Gibson P94 , the Neck is sweet and i love It , but in the bridge i feel that is not for me , very punchy but is "thicker "sound.
(I'm italian and I don't know all' the terms :)

So I could buy from a friend a Duncan' 59 , but i should remove the solderless wiring with 300k + 500k pots , and re-wiring with all 500k , paper oil cap , and' 50 wiring.

This is a invasive operation and i want ask if a Gibson P94 Neck is a good combination with a s.Duncan 59 Bridge in terms of "style" and output ?!?!
I like 60/70 sound , Zeppelin ecc.

Thanks to all'.

Re: Gibson SG Pickup combination P94/sd59

The 59 set works well in SGs because it is mids-scooped, and SGs are mids-forward. So that combination balances out the mids.

If you want to decrease "thickness" in the bridge pickup, decreasing mids would do that.

So, yes, try the 59 :D

Welcome to the forum

I would redo with 500k pots - but that is me. That alone might fix the bridge problem a bit. If you aren't confident in wiring, then you can leave it and find other ways around the tone issues.

For replacement pickups for 60's/70's music, in my experience in an SG
'59 is good
Whole Lotta Humbucker is really good
'59/Custom Hybrid is better
Pearly Gates is among the best (if you use the tone control to tame the high end as needed)

You don't need PIO caps, just need the correct value cap. The only cap to avoid would be cheap little ceramic disk caps because apparently (for all the ones I've measured) they leak and/or do not discharge consistently, which leads to a muddier/unclear sound. Anything else is fine.

Re: Gibson SG Pickup combination P94/sd59

I would think is 59 is a great choice, especially over the 490T. If you want more power, and a slightly more modern sound, go with the 59/Custom Hybrid. Either will have you playing that SG a lot more.

I'd think the '59 would be a good companion to the Gibson P-94. I've got my '59 matched with a Duncan Phat Cat which I guess is a sorta similar pickup.
