I think overall the Standards are just much nicer guitars than the Specials. I can't comment on the Classic though since it appears GC has a monopoly on those and they don't make it north of the border.

the classic is a great guitar. one of the favorite i have ever played, much less owned. feels great, looks great, sounds great.

No, it was.

In the old days the dual P90 SGs were the specials and there was no classic.

Now the special is a batwing dual hum guitar and the classic is a dual P90, also with batwing.

I forgot about the neck thickness. The SG has a good size neck, which I like from a playing standpoint and I also think it increases the chance to get a nice sounding one.

I would say standard for sure. Me, I like the binding, like the idea of it being not a bunch of laminated pieces, and just find them to feel more solid

The OLD P-90 specials I think had the one-piece bridge/tailpiece. The Classics have separate bridge and tailpiece. Currently Gibson has two specials (with humbuckers) - regular and faded. I never could get along with the feel of the faded finish. I've had my '96 Special for about 8 years now and have never had any complaints about fretwork or sound.

are they high output? what can I expect?

also i kind of wanted to get an SG in black...but that isnt as important.

if you can locate a "real" sg special with the p-90's versus humbuckers, you might like that. They really kick a$$. Failing that, go with the standard. You'll be much happier with that than getting the current version of the special.

Yeah I thought we were talking about that kind of SG Special.

For most things, the Classic is a great guitar and more inexpensive than a standard. I do like me the Standard too though...

The P-90's in the Classic are regular Gibson P-90's. They are about 8.5K wind, lots of clarity and midrange. Not HUGE bottom, but should be enough. Vintage P-90 "bite and growl". This was with my experience of course.

I don't know that i'd get one over my standard. But as my next purchase, would probley be the SG classic, firebird, or ES-335 for the different tone (different to a solidbody HB guitar)

P90s will make you realize that you don't need high output pickups to sound good.

I know it sound crazy but trust me.

If you never played P90 I can't recommend buying a SG classic blind.

Also, it is easy to put P90 sounding pickups into a humbucker guitar but not vice versa.

Used SG Stds are very reasonably priced and come in black.

I'll go out on a limb and say the Classic and the Special both have a universal route that will allow you to switch between the two given the appropriate pickguards.

I gotta pull apart my SG Special soon - I'll see if a P-90 can be fit in there.... it was made before the P-90 craze came back, though, so things migt have changed since '92.

Also, the current Special has been the Special for a lot longer than the old Special was the Special.

Unfortunately, yes. A real Special had P-90's. The current version has a dot neck like the original, but has uncovered humbuckers.

That's the called the SG Classic now. You can find them under a 1,000 all day long used.

Well, you can get a LP & put in a pair of HB-sized P-90's (which I've done). Sounds great. And with P-90's having twin magnets, it's very easy to change the EQ to get what you want.

I wish there were more P-90 LP's around in colors besides gold tops. It would really be nice if they were common in black, oxblood, wine red, and various flames. People would buy them.

In the 60's, yes, it was the Special. I'm not sure how long it lasted. They started getting funky in the 70's with the SGs and then the Firebrands, etc. The current SG Special came out in the 80's sometime and has been in production ever since.

+1. SG's hit an all time low in the early 1970's, probably the ugliest solid bodies Gibson ever made; wasn't until the mid 80's that they went back to the orginal 1960's specs. Took a long time.
